🕊️ Each year, World Humanitarian is hosted on August 19th, honouring the sacrifice and work of humanitarian aid workers. This event also focuses on a theme, bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises, and for the safety and security of aid workers. This year’s theme is #ActForHumanity highlighting the efforts to confront the normalization of attacks on civilians, including humanitarians, and impunity under International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Eight aid workers, under condition of anonymity, describe their experiences of the brutality of constant bombardment, and dwindling access to food, clean water, medicine or healthcare in El Fasher, in southwestern #Sudan, after 18mts of conflict. The aid workers are from CARE International UK, Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp, Norwegian Refugee Council, Plan International, Relief International, Save the Children International, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL and from the GOAL operation in El Fasher. Parties to conflict must uphold international humanitarian law (IHL), which includes protection of civilians, and end to indiscriminate targeting of civilians, refraining from using starvation or sexual violence as a weapon of war, and preventing mass atrocities. In conflict zones around the world, violence against aid workers shows a blatant disregard for International Humanitarian Law. This year, World Humanitarian Day calls attention to the dangers civilian aid workers face everyday. Humanitarian work requires access to vulnerable populations in sometimes dangerous areas. The attack on FSD’s Kharkiv offices just last month by a Russian missile as well as the deadly attacks on HALO deminers in Afghanistan in 2021 highlight the risks deminers face while trying to protect others. Today, we recognize their bravery and join the international community in calling for the protection of humanitarian aid workers around the world so that they can continue supporting vulnerable communities. #ActForHumanity #WorldHumanitarianDay

Civilians and aid workers must be protected. At all times. In all places. No exceptions. Together with the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, we continue standing up for international humanitarian law anywhere in the world. --- International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. It is based on the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention on protecting civilians in conflict and the 1977 and 2005 Additional Protocols, and lays out the responsibilities of states and non-state armed groups during an armed conflict. IHL requires, among other things: 🔹 the rapid and unimpeded passage for humanitarian aid during armed conflicts; 🔹 the freedom of movement for humanitarian workers in conflict areas; 🔹 the protection of civilians (including medical and humanitarian workers); 🔹 the protection of refugees, prisoners, and the wounded and sick. As one of the world’s largest humanitarian donors, the EU has always been firmly committed to promoting compliance with IHL. #NotATarget Over 30 volunteers and staff from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have been killed, in line of duty during year 2024. ⛑️🩸 It is deeply concerning that humanitarian relief workers continue to be targeted in conflict zones. According to International Humanitarian Law #IHL Rule 31, all humanitarian relief personnel must be respected and protected. IHL, a set of rules designed to limit the impact of armed conflict, ensures that those providing life-saving aid are shielded from harm. Targeting these individuals is not only a violation of international law but also a breach of basic human rights. As we mourn the loss of colleagues in this line of duty, we extend our deepest sympathies to their families. Their sacrifice must remind us of the importance of protecting those who work tirelessly to save lives in the most challenging conditions. It's not only about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement or the United Nations, but any volunteer or staff of humanitarian organisations at the forefront protecting and providing relief to our civilians, need to be protected to return home, safely. We are #NotATarget! Nor civilians, hospitals or schools! #HumanRights #IHL #ProtectAidWorkers #HumanitarianLaw #ConflictZones
