Shaping Queensland’s tourism future….. Queensland Tourism Development is developing "Destination 2045: Queensland’s Tourism Future", a 20-year strategy to guide the growth of our state’s tourism industry. This plan aims to reflect the needs and ambitions of Queensland’s communities while identifying sustainable opportunities for growth across the visitor economy. This is an important opportunity for our region to have a voice in shaping the future of tourism. The strategy will focus on key areas including: • Ecotourism • The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games • Investment Attraction • Tourism Experience Development • Access and Connectivity • Events Delivery With its natural beauty and distinct character, our region is central to Queensland’s tourism story. It’s vital that our local communities and businesses play a role in shaping this plan, ensuring our priorities and unique offerings are represented in this vision for the next 20 years. Your input will inform a strategy that positions tourism as a key driver of economic growth, alongside protecting and showcasing the landscapes and communities we are proud to call home. The consultation process is open, closing Friday 28 February 2025 and Queensland Tourism is calling on individuals, businesses, and organisations to share their insights and ideas. REPORT LAUNCH 🚀 Join us on 23rd October 3pm BST for the launch of our NEW report: 'Creating equitable destinations: How to manage and distribute tourism’s value to better serve communities.' Many Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) and National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) aim to better serve their communities by growing and spreading the benefits of tourism. However, while those directly involved in tourism will gain the most, the burden of hosting visitors is widely felt by local communities. This imbalance has, unsurprisingly, sparked civil mobilisations and protests in destinations around the world. It’s clear that placemaking and benefit-sharing must be part of the future of destination management to maintain public support. But what does an equitable tourism model look like? Join us to hear from the team behind a new report from the Travel Foundation that explores this question, and provides 40+ ideas for action, based on real-world examples, that DMOs can consider.

This was a revelation for me. To say I am astonished by the Highland Council's ‘Sustainable’ Tourism Stategy is an understatement Within the Highland Council's ‘Sustainable’ Tourism Strategy - year round opening of the tourism sector is described as 'over-tourism' This is a quote from the strategy verbatim: “Several additional points that received a lot of traction were made include constant growth and year-round tourism was often equated to ‘over-tourism’ and therefore seen as counterproductive and unsustainable’ Year-round opening enables those working within the industry to be paid - all year - and to finance home occupation - either by paying rent or a mortgage over the course of a year. Year-round opening of an economy is normal. Are you so far removed from real daily life Highland Council, as to express 'overtourism' as being equivatent to a year-round economy? So a six month operating period for an economy is normal and desirable? I would look at scrapping your ‘Sustainable’ Tourism Strategy and starting again. Ontario’s last tourism strategy was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism in 2016 through collaboration with industry stakeholders. Now, TIAO is proud to be leading the development of a new industry led Ontario tourism strategy, and they need industry input. This strategy will guide growth for the tourism sector, ensuring it is industry-led and market-driven. Business voices are crucial to ensuring that Ontario’s tourism industry not only recovers but thrives in the global market.
