Two new monument designations in California will permanently protect over 800,000 acres of public land, expand outdoor recreation opportunities, and honor sites sacred to Tribes. The Chuckwalla National Monument will protect public land in the eastern Coachella Valley, near Joshua Tree National Park. The area includes places of interest like Painted Canyon and Box Canyon, and the historic Bradshaw Trail. The designation of Sáttítla National Monument preserves another 206,000 acres of public lands and waters in Northern California near Mount Shasta. “These monuments safeguard sites of sacred, cultural, and historic significance; protect critical biodiversity and habitat; and expand outdoor recreation access for current and future generations,” said Katie Hawkins, California Program Director for Outdoor Alliance. Both monuments have received widespread support from Tribal leaders, local stakeholders, and the outdoor recreation community.

Awesome news! Thank you to everyone who helped advocate for these incredible places!
