Every three minutes a child is born somewhere in the world with a cleft condition. In first-world countries, corrective surgery is usually done within the first 18 months of life. In Southern Africa, where safe surgery is not always freely available or accessible, a child may have to wait years for the chance to live a normal life. Depending on the severity, cleft conditions can be repaired in just 45 minutes. Your donation makes new smiles possible. Did you know? Teeth may grow at an angle, adding to the disfigurement and making it difficult for the child to chew properly. Following surgery, the child may need orthodontistry to ensure teeth are correctly aligned. A message from Dr. Vishaal Bhambhwani: Some eye surgeries just cannot wait. For example, if you have a retinal tear, it can turn into a full retinal detachment within days. When that happens, you would need to travel to Winnipeg or Toronto for major eye surgery and possibly face weeks of recovery. Worse, you probably couldn't fly home. This operation often involves injecting a special gas into your eyeball that can't take pressure changes at high altitudes. That's why I'm asking that you help to raise $45,000 to cover the costs of a new laser. Please donate at https://lnkd.in/gSDptbMC Every week, we use our current laser to treat about 20 scheduled patients plus emergency cases, so it is in constant use. But that laser is over 10 years old and is now at risk of breakdown. Many of our patients don't have the days or weeks it could take to fix. Your donation to the Lions Vision Care Centre today would ensure our patients can get the laser treatment they need, right here in Thunder Bay. Technology has improved quite a bit in the last 10 years, as you can imagine. The new laser has a lot of exciting features: • Sharper images for a clearer view • Wireless, for less tripping and wire damage • Voice and touch control • Built-in patient safety features But I'm saving the best part for last: This new laser is portable. That's important because if an inpatient at our Hospital needs laser surgery, we can bring the laser to them. In some cases, that's much more convenient – and safer – than bringing the patient to us. Once again, you can donate at https://lnkd.in/gSDptbMC Thank you on behalf of the team! - Dr. Vishaal Bhambhwani MD, Staff Ophthalmologist, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

🔬 CLEFT-Funded Research: Exploring Long-Term Effects of Vomerine Flap Surgery 🔬 At CLEFT, our mission is to bridge gaps in cleft care, improving lives both in the UK and internationally. A vital part of this work is sponsoring ground-breaking research with the potential to change treatment outcomes for those born with cleft lip and/or palate. That’s why we’re funding a study in collaboration with the North Thames Cleft Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital and St. Andrew’s Centre, Broomfield Hospital. This study focuses on a controversial surgical technique, the vomerine flap closure, used during lip repair. The aim? To assess the long-term impact of this technique on: • Facial appearance, including upper jaw growth and dental arch alignment • Speech and hearing outcomes • Psychosocial well-being of patients This research could lead to improved, less invasive surgical approaches and make a significant difference to the care of patients, particularly in low-resource settings. We’re committed to improving cleft care worldwide, and projects like this bring us closer to that goal. Stay tuned for updates on this important work! 🗣️👶 💙 If you’d like to support important research like this, please consider donating to the CLEFT Research Fund. Every contribution helps us make a difference.
