"He wasn't happy at all about the fact that I was invited to a conference. I did not expect such a bad reaction. He was actually saying that he doesn't know how I would speak and how I would present myself and that he doesn't know if I'm even suitable for presenting this because I'm not the typical face of the company regarding my gender and ethnicity." Our second episode of Redlines tells the story of Natasha - a pseudonym, an architect with over 14 years of experience who faced discrimination and career roadblocks at the hands of her employer. Despite her expertise and external recognition, Natasha was excluded from opportunities and advancement. Three major incidents: → Natasha was invited to speak at a prestigious conference about her work in computational design. → Her firm intervened when she had the chance to pursue a PhD with a prominent university. → Even after 14 years as an architect, Natasha faced more roadblocks when applying for promotion to senior architect. Key Takeaways: → Talented employees can face resentment and exclusion when their skills outshine others, especially when they don’t fit expected demographic norms. → Firms may prioritize maintaining power dynamics over equitable advancement, even at the expense of utilizing talent. → Academia is not immune to unethical behavior when prestige and connections are at stake. → Persist in developing your skills and pursuing your passion, even if your current environment doesn’t value you.We deeply thank Natasha for her commitment to using her voice to shed light on a profoundly problematic and harrowing incident she endured. In doing so, she has extended her support to individuals facing similar challenges in silence, helping to bring their struggles to the forefront. Natasha, thank you for your dedication and courage in advocating for positive change. In a recent interview, I discussed the ongoing evolution of my project “Low-vision,” which began with my personal experiences and expanded to consider the broader challenges faced by individuals with low vision, ultimately questioning our perception of reality. This project is not only an exploration of perception but also an integral part of my artistic journey. I invite you to read the full article and join the conversation as we delve deeper into this topic. https://lnkd.in/dBpQdDhR

I use psychology to build brands people actually love while disrupting norms with unfiltered honesty.
You have 1 hour to speak to a room of people, what topic do you choose? The catch, you can’t speak about your profession. A lot of us centralise our identity around what we do, not who we are. This is why most fail to create impact. For me, I’d choose “Resilience: Shaping new directions through past experiences” If you think about the content that has the most impact with you. Mine aren’t all the pros in my space, they’re: - The everyday people sharing experiences - Young people passionate for change - Unknown musicians sharing their talent - Victims speaking their truth to strengthen the many voices Connections happen from real, relatable stories. We often think that societal change comes from high up, but it doesn’t. It’s heavily influenced at a grassroots level. And then momentum builds. And builds. And, eventually becomes a conversation, a movement, or a trend. Start the conversation on the topic your passionate about, you never know the ripple effect it could cause.

4 Questions on the Creative Process with Leslie Alfin As Women’s History Month continues, #sparkchamber continues to welcome a woman of the present :) — visual artist and #sparkchamber alumna, Leslie Alfin. With collaborator Karen Dolmanisth, Leslie has a new show going up this week at the Foundation Gallery, in the Arts Center Building of SUNY Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson New York. The show runs March 21 through April 14, with a reception from 4-6pm on the opening day. About the show: “Socrates believed that if enough questions were asked, truth would be discovered. META is a collaboration by two artists who have made careers of truth-seeking via seemingly incongruent method, process, and practice. “Leslie Alfin explores the internet, following data paths tracing the devolution of original contexts to the deepest meta-levels where meaning is obscured and truth becomes ambiguous. The data collected is ultimately re-materialized as metaphorical constructed environments that neither confirm nor deny the validity of her findings. Karen Dolmanisth explores meaning and truth through a metaphysical approach that, through the thoughtful curation of objects, placement, movement and relativity, weaves together abstract concepts such as being, knowing, substance, identity, time and space. “Together the artists have created an expansive installation that is paradoxically meta and non-meta creating shifting meaning and truth derived from the whole, the individual components, and their autonomous practices.” Definitely check it out if you’re in the area! To celebrate the show, we highlight Leslie’s thoughts on the creative process originally posted 101220: bit.ly/FFSCLeslieAlfin2

In this interview, Eunji Kang reflects on the intricate dance between social impact and profit-driven models with the aim of reconceptualizing design as a framework that connects practices, markets and philosophies. A crucial question emerges: is our direction towards unity despite factionalism and positions, or are we going in the opposite direction? 💡 Hightlights of the interview include: ▪ Embrace human values in design ▪ Ensure deliberative spaces through real communication, which involves deep listening, patience, and exploration. ▪ Encourage microchanges as agents of humility, inclusivity, and kindness ▪ Reimagining sensemaking and its tools. ▪ Develop a collective conscience as well as a collective intelligence ▪ Invest in solidarity, knowledge, and care as immaterial economies. Don't miss this inspiring conversation: https://lnkd.in/ezMQQ3DM

Long time no see! End of the semester, final projects, career changes... I had some super dynamic and exciting news in the last few days. I will share some of it later, but for now, here is a quick summary of the last few weeks! What I am up to: - Foresight and scenario building: I'm diving into topics such as trend analysis, signal scanning, and short, medium, and long-term forecasting. Then, I'm currently working on two projects: Retail Media and Consulting Industry. - Career move: Started working in marketing and product marketing. Specifically, content planning and creation for newsletters and Linkedin. - Started a personal project for spring: every week I explore a new thing. So far, I have been to a flea market in Malmö, watched Eurovision for the first time and gone on a solo trip! Last, but not least: my favorite content of the last weeks! Her Playboy picture changed the internet forever - Stuff Mom Never Told You - There Are No Girls on the Internet (ENG) Do you know who is the "First Lady of the Internet"? Lena Forsén was a Swedish model featured in Playboy in 1972. The picture was used to engineer the digital image format that would become the JPEG. But Lena herself became invisible and unkown. This story explores tech bias, women in tech, and Lena's perspective on it all. Listen it here: https://lnkd.in/damTBRhT Jimena Gonik's serie "366 discos" (ESP) Informative content + creative format + community engagement = chef's kisses. If you want to discover new albums and learn more about music history/culture, this is the content! I also like how Jimena catches the attention of the viewer's in a world where everyone is fighting for that. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/duUSnU_x Innovation 2.0: The Influence You Have - Hidden Brain (ENG) Are you really aware of your influence on your friends, family, and even the stranger on the street? This episode explores about the egocentric bias, obedience, asking for help, and how we can use it to our advantage and to develop innovation. Listen to it here: https://lnkd.in/dUeWnS2e

'I'd like to use art more as a tool to get people thinking, get people involved, especially young people, and hopefully, help them process the emotions of climate change and move towards a space of action and hope. At least for me, as a young person, art felt like the way to have my voice be heard, and I hope to help other people experience that as well.' https://lnkd.in/gypii-xs I first heard about Sophie Weider from an email she sent me on August 14th, 2024. With Sophie’s permission, here is an excerpt: 'I recently discovered the conscient podcast and have been absolutely hooked on it. It has been the most heartwarming, uplifting, and inspiring experience for me. Your empathy and care shows in the thoughtful questions you ask in your interviews. Thank you for creating this wonderful resource for us all to learn from and enjoy! I have been working in the intersection of the climate and arts spaces for some time and found it to be incredibly validating to hear the stories of so many amazing people doing similar work in your podcast episodes. Sophie and I had coffee in Ottawa a few days later. We talked about the role of art in facilitating inclusive processes for envisioning a more just and sustainable future and Sophie mentioned some of the projects that she is involved with, including Zine for Hope a creative platform for youth to voice their perspectives on climate change and their hopes for a better future. And what is that better future? It’s sometimes hard to imagine but Sophie believe in arts as a connector: 'Something that I really think is valuable about art is that it doesn't hold one objective reality to be true, and instead it allows for multiple subjective perspectives to coexist. Because while it's valuable to have science that tells us the answers, it's sometimes hard to know that this is the answer and not this one, especially when it comes to more subjective experiences, like, how should we relate to our living environment? ' I invited Sophie to have a conversation with me as part of a series of with people in their 20’s, including e154 - the art of history and gaming with my son historian Riel Schryer (also my son), e200 maggie chang - the power of art with environmentalist, poet, writer, and artist Maggie Chang and the final episode of season 5, with earth systems scientist Clara Schryer (also my daughter). These four young people, and their peers, inspire and motivate me. Sophie is also an artist who wrote and illustrated two children's books, ‘The Girl Who Saved a Tree’ (2018) and ‘Who?’ (2020) that explores environmental change and activism to inspire young people to become change-makers in their communities. #ClimateAction #ArtForChange #Sustainability #YouthEmpowerment #CreativeExpression #PositiveChange #CommunitySupport #EnvironmentalEducation

Our age has been called a Communication Age. Ever more technologies transmit information ever more seamlessly and rapidly. Particularly in industrialized societies, our lives have become almost unthinkable without the latest communication technologies. Although communications have become digitally facilitated, we are witnessing great paradoxes. Loneliness, misunderstandings, filter bubbles, disinformation, information overloads and other phenomena may have become the qualitative flipside of a quantitative explosion of information. Discover more about why we need a healthier and more regenerative approach to communications. #RegenerativeCommunications #Regeneration #Communications #Marketing
This month, we focus on possibility. Regenerative communicators see the people they interact with as human beings: Alive, social, and with agency and the ability to think for themselves. They have a wide range of social identities that are contextual relational, and always evolve. Who I am depends on who I am with and in which situation I am in. Who I can become is different from who I was yesterday. However, business often reduces human identity to passive takers and denies both the reality and possibility of a reciprocal relationship that exists or could exist between actors in an economy. We are “consumers” or “users”. Such labels reinforce the habitual story that things are merely there for us to be consumed and disposed of, and that user's sole function is using. How can we as communicators help the people we engage with wake up to a larger, relational identity beyond their economic use? What became possible if we told the story of what it would mean for us o thrive together? In our latest essay “re:storying the possibility of a thriving world” we examine the the toxic narratives of modern communications and inquire about the role of communicators and those we communicate with in today’s world. What else is possible?
