I’m proud of our comms team earning these Telly Awards. These awards are just the beginning of our storytelling efforts to bring community voices into the limelight. Visual storytelling is a passion of mine, but ten years ago when I was working in the fashion industry, I never imagined I’d be doing crisis communications on the frontlines of fierce debates about environmental justice and the carbon market. I got into forest conservation and the carbon market through the fashion industry. This could only happen through the unique work opportunities presented to me by Wildlife Works and I’ve never looked back. When I pivoted from the sustainable fashion business unit to the carbon business about 5 years ago, I worked to set our organization on a path towards two fundamental, values-driven marketing and branding goals: 1) elevate the community-centered foundation of our conservation roots and elevate this as climate justice in action 2) bring the beauty and value of storytelling to our work in the voluntary carbon market. It’s rewarding to see the budding fruits of this strategy through awards acknowledgement. Climate justice though, is much more complex than most people understand. What I am clear about is which side I’m on — always on the side of local communities and their self-determined goals. Those who are deep in the fieldwork know that the dividing line is not always obvious, linear, or back and white. Some want an easy answer to land rights, carbon use claims, science, etc. If you’re honest with the debate in all of these issues, it’s clear that nothing is black and white. Some say that any carbon offset claim is proof that it is a false climate solution. Offset claims is an obvious target and the industry and government regulation is making progress towards more transparent and rigorous claims integrity. We absolutely must not allow carbon credit claims to obscure or set back real decarbonization. But stopping the carbon market will not stop polluters from polluting. It will only stop polluters from voluntarily paying Global South governments and local communities for their climate adaptation and conservation work. Where are the promised funds for loss and damages? If you take away the offset claims, it looks a lot like climate reparations funding to me. Carbon then becomes a measurement of how much reparations a company should pay. We’re on the right path to fixing claims on our journey of continuous improvement, but let’s not burn the house down to smoke out a rat. There’s a collaborative, win-win solution to the carbon market that addresses existing lopsided power dynamics, doesn’t stop the pace of decarbonization needed, and most of all, delivers climate finance to where it’s most needed — into the hands of local communities.
Wildlife Works is pleased to announce that not one, but four of our short films won Telly Awards this year! The Telly Awards is the premier award honoring excellence in video and television across all screens. This was a record breaking year for the Telly Awards, with nearly 13,000 entries from across the globe and from top video and television content producers such as Adobe, National Geographic, and MTV Entertainment Studios. “Visual storytelling has an incredible power to transport viewers into the heart of the issues Wildlife Works is working on. With beautiful visuals and compelling human stories, our short films allow us to bring these remote places and complex topics to global audiences in a way that static reports or data points simply cannot. We’re honored that the Telly Awards has recognized the quality of our filmmaking.” - WW Global Marketing Communications Director, Joyce Hu Learn more about each film and find links to watch them in this blog: https://lnkd.in/gmV2S3vn
