There is a persistent notion that the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is an inflexible roadblock that can’t effectively review any technology other than large light water reactors. Its recent performance indicate that perception is false or obsolete. Last month, Kairos received a construction permit for its first Hermes KP-FHR. A yesterday, Natura Resources received a construction permit for its MSRR (molten salt research reactor). Each review took a little less than 2 years. Both were for systems that have almost nothing in common with large light water reactors. Interestingly, the building at Abilene Christian University (ACU) in which Natura’s MSRR will be installed already exists. The facility has a high capacity overhead crane, plenty of space for systems and components and even a deep void surrounded by concrete that is ready a reactor to be installed. In other words, there isn’t much “construction” left to do. The remaining tasks are more like equipment installation.

Oustanding news for Natura Resources, ACU and the nuclear industry. Licensing a Gen IV technology research reactor is an important achievement for the advancement of nuclear. It demonstrates clear and tangible progress for advanced SMRs.

SMR’s will play a pivotal roll in the UK striving to meet its net zero goal by 2050. The mix of EPR reactors in #hinkleypointc & #Sizewellc aided by SMR’s are critical for the UK to generate green energy for years to come.

DOE LAUNCHES INITIATIVE FOR NEXT-GEN REACTORS The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a $900 million funding opportunity to promote the deployment of the first two Generation III+ light water small modular reactors (SMRs) in the United States. Released on 16 October, the initiative aims to address long-standing challenges faced by the nuclear industry. The program offers up to $800 million for "first mover" teams to deploy SMRs and up to $100 million for "fast follower" projects, targeting key gaps such as design, licensing, and site preparation. Applications, due by 17 January , 2025, must demonstrate technological readiness and community and regulatory support. The funding, part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, seeks to enhance nuclear energy capabilities and address cost, supply chain, and licensing challenges. SIZEWELL C GRANTED NUCLEAR SITE LICENCE The Sizewell C nuclear power project in Suffolk has been granted a nuclear site licence by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), marking a significant milestone for the £20bn project. This is the first time the ONR has issued a site licence since 2012, when it approved the Hinkley Point C plant. The licence, which comes into force immediately, follows a rigorous assessment process by the nuclear regulator. It formalises the ONR's regulatory responsibility and allows the project company, Sizewell C, to request permission for the start of nuclear-related construction. However, the granting of the licence does not permit the immediate start of construction, as Sizewell C Ltd must still seek additional approvals from the ONR and the Environment Agency. The project is anticipating a Final Investment Decision in the coming months, with the UK government and EDF searching for further investment to cover construction costs.
