Colleagues, please do listen to this episode with Joshua Castellino (Co-ED of Minority Rights Group) on the role of reparative justice in advancing social and ecological justice. Joshua provides many deep insights including exposing the racist and exploitative dimensions of green colonialism. For eg, he rightly points out how the 30x30 target (protect 30% of earth by 2030) continues on the colonial-capitalist logic & will result in widespread displacement & devastation of many Indigenous communities in the South while allowing people in the North & polluters continue their destructive ways. Joshua underscores the need to boldly reckon with & mobilize reparations against violent legacies of colonialism & capitalism so we can jointly put an end to these legacies. As Joshua highlights, we need new emancipatory worldmaking solutions centered on the leadership & needs of the most marginalized communities, and shifts the burden of change (& payment) on dominant corporations/communities who are the major polluters, exploiters, and consumers. Among other things, Joshua highlights that our economic and environmental solutions should go beyond nationalist approach and instead adopt internationalist/multilateral approach focused on sub-regional framework (based on shared geographical and ecological parameters).
