I guess that many companies hire Software Developers and expect that these developers will be productive from day 1... Unfortunately that's not how the game works! Even if the newly hired developers are extremely knowledgeable and experienced, they cannot just jump in and help. First, there needs to be an acquaintance period with the processes, tools, techniques, and codebase. Then there's the team environment that the developers are placed in, along with the team dynamics that need to be understood. Finally, there's the understanding of the bigger picture. How does the work being done by the newly hired developers' teams fit into the bigger architecture of the organization? These three phases may be running concurrently, or they may be running in parallel in each developer's mind. However, they always occur. And here's the bigger problem. These phases of acclimation may take up to six months for junior developers. That's six months when the developers are under-producing, producing sub-par code, or producing code that really doesn't fit the organizational "coding mindset".
