The way salaries work is simple: you clock in Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and at the end of the month, you get a paycheck. The more responsibilities you assume or overtime you undertake, the fatter your paycheck.
But what if you wanted the fat paycheck without the hassle of showing up for work?
This seems to be the mindset of many main actors in European football today, such as football players and managers.
In recent weeks, several European football players have threatened to strike against the new Champions League setup, which requires each team to play at least two additional games per season, and the new FIFA Club World Cup competition in 2025.
What strikes me is that players don’t seem to realize this is how they earn money. These are the same players who willingly travel to faraway places for excessively-paid tournaments like the national Super Cups.
While we wait to see how the new-look Champions League plays out, there’s another aspect to consider.
In my research on referee bias, I highlight how referees often feel pressured by large crowds and end up favoring more prominent teams. As more money gets injected into the tournaments, this pressure is likely to increase, along with the need to keep potential referee bias in check.
