Job Hunting at the Sindh HEC Career Fair!🚀 Today, I hit the ground running at the Sindh HEC career fair, meeting with representatives from a wide range of organizations! As a food technologist, I naturally gravitated towards some companies that caught my interest💡. One such company was Pakistan Beverage Limited (PBL) PepsiCo Pakistan. Despite being an Israeli-owned firm, I was eager to connect with their team. However, my conversation with the HR team left me a bit surprised‼️. They informed me that PBL doesn't hire food technologists because they focus on beverages, not food. Apparently, only microbiologists are considered for their roles. This was quite shocking, considering the intricate science behind beverage development, even if the base ingredient is water💧. Here's the thing: PBL itself has a history of hiring food technologist interns for their ROSHAN KAL program. So, the lack of awareness from the HR regarding their own company's practices was a bit concerning. Just a heads up for any fellow food technologists out there targeting PBL! The Art of Interviewing and Counseling Future Generations Participating in the recent job fair in Mayagüez was an enriching and rewarding experience. It allowed me to reconnect with old colleagues and friends, but perhaps more importantly, it gave me the chance to engage with the new generation of professionals, many of whom are engineers, microbiologists, and biotechnologists. Beyond their technical abilities, what stood out to me most was their creativity and passion for various disciplines, qualities that will surely benefit any company lucky enough to hire them for co-ops or internships. As a senior leader, fostering, guiding, and mentoring this emerging talent has always been a priority for me, and it is precisely why I chose to be part of this event. There’s an art to interviewing, but there’s also a deeper responsibility that comes with counseling the future generation. It’s not just about assessing their skills for a particular job—it’s about understanding their vision, helping them develop professionally, and giving them the tools to thrive in their careers. When I interview candidates, especially those just beginning their professional journeys, I see it as an opportunity to shape and encourage their development. They come to us with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, and as leaders, it’s our responsibility to nurture that creativity. The questions I ask aren’t just about their technical abilities but also about how they think, how they solve problems, and how they collaborate with others. These are the qualities that will make them great contributors to any team, but they’re also the skills that will serve them throughout their careers. The job fair was a reminder of how essential it is to be both a guide and a learner. While I aim to teach and share my experiences, the younger generation—engineers, microbiologists, biotechnologists, and more—has much to offer as well. Their enthusiasm, boldness, and unique approach to challenges often make me rethink old methods and consider new possibilities. In a rapidly evolving work environment, we all have something to learn from each other, regardless of where we are in our careers. In conclusion, the art of interviewing and mentoring is about more than simply identifying talent. It’s about cultivating a relationship where knowledge flows both ways, and where we invest in the growth of future leaders. I look forward to continuing to foster these connections and to seeing what the future holds for this talented generation.
