Ted Murrell, store manager of Save-On-Foods Cranbrook, shares what makes him excited to come to work every day: "I remember the first day I got hired, I knew right away I had a new career – because my team was so much fun to be around. To this day, the positive atmosphere has continued, and it keeps me excited to come to work each day. Plus, the company provided me with stability, and I raised a family." During his 40-year career with the company, Ted has moved around to different stores and met many wonderful people along the way. I cannot believe the reaction to that post! Thank you to everyone who has sent support and love, redundancy and job insecurity is certainly a topic of conversation at the moment across lots of sectors but especially across fundraising, even more so after the NI blow which will hit charities hard, there will be a lot of chief execs scratching their heads right now wondering just how to make the already ridiculous sums add up I have ALOT of DMs to work through so please bear with me, I will get back to you For my fundraising colleagues, I have spent three glorious hours with our community champion this afternoon getting all the inside information on how Tesco works and I will share it all with you over the next few weeks My top tip - if you are a community fundraiser (for a local charity or group) and you don’t have a relationship with your community champion in your local Tesco store or Tesco Extra (not the smaller ones) please please please go and seek them out and make that connection, build that relationship for 2025, they are there to support local charities in their community and can do AMAZING things Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 Our dog shelter had a booth at a local street fair. We brought some dogs, some giveaways, some raffle items & a donation jar. A few of the volunteers walked around with the jar, but came up mostly empty. We did sell some raffle tickets. And when people took free stuff, we encouraged them to make a donation. Then I took the jar in one hand, dog on a leash in the other. And I just started striking up conversations with people passing by. Not about us, our mission, our needs. About whatever they seemed interested in. Their favorite team (given away by a t-shirt or cap) Where they worked (also given away by apparel) Whether they had a dog. Or I made jokes: "$100 to pet the dog" "Hey look, we've got a barcode for credit card donations in case you forgot your cash" Recap: I talked to people, joked around with them, treated them like normal humans. No awkward ask. And...I collected more than the rest of the team combined. Not because I’m a better fundraiser. Because I was not focused on raising funds. Now I realize this is transactional fundraising and not long-term major donor nurture… …but the point is 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. It was a mess, costing them money & space. Then Happen Ventures stepped in with the Beneficial Reuse Program. Walgreens had a big problem. Hundreds of coolers were sitting there, taking up valuable space in their warehouse. This is how we turned this challenge into a win for everyone… 1. We checked out the coolers… 2. We got them moving… 3. We teamed up… So what does this mean for Walgreens & the community? → They cut down on storage costs. → Walgreens freed up crucial space for new products. → Local charities got much-needed equipment for their communities. → They positively impacted the environment by giving the coolers a second life. Eddy from a local charity told us... “We are grateful for your donation of 214 of these beautiful coolers. We have already given some to a local fire department for their use.
