As an advocate for racial education equity, I feel it's crucial to discuss the current investigation by the U.S. Department of Education into Chandler Unified School District. This case sheds light on the systemic challenges faced by Black students and their families in accessing quality education. The investigation highlights issues that are all too common in our education system: disparities in discipline, accessibility to advanced courses, and the overall school experience for Black students compared to their peers. This situation underlines the critical need for effective solutions, including school choice and access to Education Savings Accounts (ESA's). School choice empowers parents, especially those from minoritized communities, to select educational environments that best suit their children's needs. ESA's further this by providing financial means to pursue these choices, whether it be for private schooling, tutoring, or specialized educational programs (i.e. #homeschools or #microschools). This flexibility is essential in addressing the unique challenges faced by Black students. The CUSD investigation is a call to action. It reminds us of the ongoing struggle for educational equity and the importance of providing all students, regardless of race or background, with the opportunity to succeed. By advocating for school choice and ESA accessibility, we can take a significant step towards a more equitable and just educational landscape. As advocates and professionals in the field of education, it's our responsibility to continue this conversation, advocate for policy changes, and work towards a system where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Let's commit to making education a pathway to success for all, not just a privilege for some. At the time of the Brown v. Board decision, the hope was that ending segregation would address deep racial inequities in educational opportunity that have long been the legacy of schooling in the United States and, yet, today inequities by race are great and the promises of Brown remain substantially unfulfilled. "Brown at 70: Reflections and The Road Forward," a new series of papers authored by some of the country’s leading scholars on educational equity, takes a look at the progress since 1954, documenting educational shifts over time (including segregation levels and achievement trends), the diversity of the teaching force, access to resources, and the relationship between democracy and education. The papers offer both a historical look at the impacts of the Brown decision, as well as guidance for the road ahead. Per data compiled by the nonprofit NYC Charter School Center, the gap was especially large for black and Hispanic students: * Black charter students outperformed their district-school counterparts by 19 points (59% testing proficient or better vs. 40%) in English and 27 points in math (61% vs. 34%). * Hispanic charter scholars outdid their regular-public-school peers by 16 points (55% vs. 39%) in English and 25 points (61% vs. 36%) in math.

Does anyone remember the scene in Apollo 13 where they are testing and retesting the lunar module start up sequence to access more amps? This is what we need to do in education continuously, reexamine what we do, ask 'why do we do things this way?' and 'is there a better way?'. What would happen if lessons were shortened by 10 minutes to enable something else to happen for example?
