This is great news. We're delighted that the new UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Graduate route visa, and highlighted that international students are welcome. The International Graduate Outcomes 2024 report, which we published in collaboration with Universities UK International clearly showed the impact of the Graduate route visa on students and the economy. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/ejGiDkfz 🎓73% of surveyed graduates felt that the visa met their expectations, reporting higher job satisfaction than those on other visas. ⚕️60% of respondents still living in the UK work in small- to medium-sized organisations, with the highest percentage employed in healthcare. We also know the importance of a welcoming environment. In Destination: UK, our new report based on the QS International Student Survey 2024, we revealed that 52% of students interested in studying in the UK said that a welcoming environment for international students was an important factor when choosing a country to study in. 📚🌏 While the previous UK government tightened restrictions on international students, Bridget Phillipson, the new Education Secretary, outlined a more balanced and evidence-based approach at the Embassy Education Conference in London. Here are the main takeaways: - International students are welcome in the UK! - Enriching Educational Environments: International students bring a wealth of diverse perspectives that enhance the academic experience for all students. -Economic Benefits: The presence of international students significantly contributes to the UK's economy, supporting local businesses and generating employment. - Cultural Exchange: They facilitate cultural exchanges that build lasting global connections and understanding. - Positive Student Experiences: The majority of international students have a positive and fulfilling experience in the UK, often returning to their home countries with strong ties to the UK. - Evidence-Based Policy Making: Future policies on international students will be informed by the best available evidence, ensuring a balanced approach to migration and its benefits. - Strengthening Global Ties: By welcoming international students, the UK strengthens its global standing and business links, fostering long-term international relationships. It is refreshing to hear the new government's stance on international students and international Higher Education. Although this is positive, there is no place for complacency and we need to keep supporting international students in their pursuit for acquiring knowledge as best as we can. 🌍🎓 #InternationalStudents #HigherEducation #GlobalConnections #CulturalExchange #EconomicGrowth #EducationPolicy #UK #UniversityOfPortsmouth University of Portsmouth 👉 Read the full speech here: https://lnkd.in/dZkk2tDK Bobby Mehta Jacqueline Priego - PhD, CPsychol, AFBPsS, SFHEA Martin Andrews SFHEA Neil Weston Bharat S. An interesting video by UK Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Philipson, speaking directly to international students outlining several reasons why the UK should be their top choice for study. Considering the on-going focus on immigration in the UK (also seen with other top study destinations like Canada and Australia), as well as the policy ‘yoyo-ing’ in the last government, this is (hopefully) a positive step towards re-marketing the UK as a ‘welcoming’ destination for international students. With the challenges being faced by the UK Higher Education Industry and the Office for Students (OfS) suggesting in their November 2024 financial report that “72% of English universities would be in deficit by the end of the academic year” [according to the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) website], an uptick in revenue via international student fees would definitely be welcome. Despite the new government and welcoming messages such as this one, will the continued focus on immigration overshadow sensibly thought-out policies which recognise international students as social and economic assets rather than immigration liabilities, or will this just be a change in rhetoric? Will the difficulties of getting “a fantastic job when you finish” faced by international students who choose to take up the 2 year post-study work visa but still struggle to gain employment be a specific government consideration? These and other questions linger, but related policies that come out of this government and their effective implementation will answer them in due course.

Really important steps in the right direction.
Following Bridget Philipson's speech at the Embassy Education Conference, we at NCC Education share our thoughts on her address: “It is encouraging to see such a vast change in the rhetoric around international education. For a long time, international students in the UK have been used as a political pawn, drawing criticism from all sides. For the new Secretary of State for Education to address this, by not only discussing the economic benefits that international students and graduates can bring to the country, but by also talking about the courage needed for individual’s to pursue an education overseas is heartening. Across the sector, we know how important it is to be welcoming to all students, we know how much the country benefits from international students, and for our government to recognise this and to make a commitment to ensuring that the UK remains a welcoming destination is very positive news. We welcome Bridget Phillipson’s comments making it clear that international students are valued in the UK and the announcement that the Graduate Visa is here to stay.” Source: https://lnkd.in/eUXMXu7y

Regional public colleges are not often thought of as hubs for international engagement, yet a number have quietly carved out their own places in global education. Here’s how. In this week's Latitudes, I look at American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) institutions that have developed international strategies that reflect their distinct profiles, such as emphasizing lower tuition costs or strong employer connections to appeal to budget-conscious foreign students. Also, Cornell University has reversed a decision to revoke the visa of an international student suspended for his part in pro-Palestinian protests on campus, which could have forced him to leave the country. And a college in the Palestinian West Bank has won a global prize for civic engagement. #internationaleducation #intled #internationalstudents #studyabroad #educationabroad #regionalcolleges #studentvisa #campusprotests #civicengagement #highereducation #highered

Working with researchers, those beyond the first degree, I know we have bridges to build with our international colleagues. I love the international, diverse setting that is a modern research university. We do better research if our talent base is broad, multi cultural, have been taught in different ways and importantly, feel welcomed to come here. We ask researchers to operate at the pinnacle of what their brains can do. No-one can do that unless they feel safe, secure and wanted. The video below is a step in the right direction. #international #visas #researchers #postdocs
