Engineers from Diraq have reached a key milestone by unlocking the potential of quantum computers to operate at warmer temperatures, accelerating the development of more powerful, cost-effective and energy-efficient systems. This breakthrough demonstrates the capability of our spin-based quantum processors to operate above one Kelvin, whilst maintaining stability and high accuracy, relaxing the significant cooling power constraints. This allows a quantum computer with integrated classical control electronics to be operated in a simple cryo-platform, making it possible to run complex error correction routines required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. By addressing key challenges to operating at scale, Diraq demonstrates continued progress on its roadmap to developing commercially relevant quantum computers. Key milestone unlocked 🔓 If you want to operate lots of qubits, you need to integrate them with electronics, which means they need to run hot 🔥. This new paper in Nature shows that even when we heat up the qubits to 1 Kelvin, we can still run all operations at above 99% fidelity. The big innovation here was the qubit initialization protocol, allowing us to select qubit states with an energy splitting far below the thermal energy (and with >99% fidelity!!!). Delighted to have developed early implementations of heralded initialization protocols here, but Jonathan and Henry really took it to the next level!

So proud to have participated in this beautiful work led by Diraq’s new star, Jonathan Huang . What does it mean? That silicon qubits can be operated with high fidelities at temperatures much higher than we initially thought possible. So the final quantum computer - once built - will require less refrigeration, thus consuming less power. Silicon qubits continue to position themselves as powerful contenders to achieve commercial fault tolerant quantum computers.
