For the last few summers we have had interns working on digitising our glass lantern slides, once used for teaching. These glass slides would have been used in a lanternslide projector. This slide features a fossilised brittle sea star.

Summer School on Gromov's h-principle https://lnkd.in/edQcuNUa In the 50s, Smale and Hirsch proved the surprising fact that the space of immersions of a manifold into another manifold (of strictly greater dimension) is homotopy equivalent to the space of bundle monomorphisms between the tangent bundles. Effectively, this says that, despite superficial appearances, immersions are purely governed by homotopy theory. In modern terms, we say that the immersion problem is flexible or, following Gromov, that it abides by the h-principle. Starting in the late 60s, Gromov showed that many other geometric problems exhibit flexibility. Many more h-principles have been discovered since, including in geometric topology, symplectic topology, complex geometry, Riemannian geometry, and beyond. To this day new flexibility phenomena are being discovered and applied, often with surprising consequences. This summer school will include foundational introductory courses on some of the main h-principle techniques (holonomic approximation, convex integration, wrinkling) as well as on recent applications to geometry and topology.

From a young age, I'd follow my father into his workshop, fascinated by his mastery with power tools and solid wood. Now, he's a top Master finish carpenter, specializing in staircases. During my dual undergraduate studies in art and architecture at UNLV, I constantly questioned why things were the way they were. Often, this led me to the Director’s office, seeking “forgiveness” and clarity. Director Lawerence once advised me, 'Always stay naïve. It keeps you curious and learning. Keep asking questions.' This wisdom is crucial, especially as we grow older and gain more experience. As a Parsons alum in the MFA Architectural Lighting Design program, I explored a materials library filled with endless possibilities. For instance, BMW was experimenting with a fabric from this library to replace metal shells of vehicles. If the traditional 40-hour work week still stands, I'd rather use that time to push boundaries, prioritize sustainability, safety, innovation, and challenge the status quo.

Every Commonwealth student, every year, undertakes a project of their own choosing and design. For our ninth-, tenth-, and eleventh-graders, this happens during Project Week in January. (Seniors and more industrious underclassmen undertake a three-week project in March.) This weeklong intensive is an opportunity to test-drive an industry—genetic research, family law, magazine publishing—or test an idea, whether it’s designing a knitting pattern, proving a mathematical theorem, or measuring the luminosity of the stars. No two projects are ever quite the same, but you can get a taste of what students undertook this year via a sampling of (highly condensed) reflections on our blog: https://bit.ly/3UU5MWs

"Pipetting is almost like cake decorating!" Gentle fine movements that need perfecting...! This brings us to today"s topic: A gentle reminder that students need lab training! When planning your upcoming lab activities, don"t forget to say YES to some of the students that apply to your lab. By doing their bachelor or master project in a real lab, they are given the opportunity for real skill training, using their hands to master the art of fine movements, perfecting their experiments!
