In United Hospital Fund of New York's most recent Blueprint, I take a moment to talk about resiliency and collective leadership during turbulent times. Here's an excerpt and a link to read in full (short read!) https://lnkd.in/et9auwZ9 This liminal moment is a good time for a resiliency check, much like the run-through in anticipation of a rocket launch. It’s useful to name the competencies we’ll need to maintain our mental health and well-being so we can be fully ready for whatever lies ahead. • Stay in the present: Use whatever works best for us to make sure negative emotions and lapses into dystopian rabbit holes don’t take hold in our minds. For me, this means meditation and physical exercise. • Believe in your self-efficacy: Recognize that, as individuals, we still can influence events and outcomes however big or small. We lose our power when we believe the struggle is lost or that we have no part in it. • Tap into people networks: Rely on relationships with family, friends, and community for strength and joy as they sustain the “lucha.” Cultivate and transmit empathy and compassion as superpowers. It’s existentially fitting that, at this moment, we are launching our Health Equity Fellowship. The program is designed to nurture the next generation of health equity changemakers in New York City. These young people, still relatively early in their medical careers, are focused on enhancing the tools at their disposal to deliver on the notion that all of us deserve an equitable opportunity at realizing our full health potential. In essence, part of their charge is to pressure-test the status quo to see where we’re falling short and where opportunities lie to improve health outcomes for our fellow New Yorkers—but especially our neighbors most in need. This fills me with hope and confidence that each of us can and must keep pushing for progress and equity. Fighting for better health care for each and every one of us—this is what UHF strives to do in all our work. Being non-partisan doesn’t mean upholding the status quo. It means examining issues that affect the health and well-being of New Yorkers from all angles, bringing people together to share diverse viewpoints, and promoting understanding of the impact of policies on real people and the opportunities for positive change.

As someone who spent over a decade building communities online for brands, I’ve often reflected on the difference between cultivating connection for business and building meaningful connection in real life. This question became even more urgent when I decided to pivot my career from marketing to social work—shifting my focus from ROI (Return on Investment) to RonR (Return on Relationship). A great mentor of mine, Ted Rubin, coined this term: RonR. It’s the idea that relationships—the love, care, and connection we foster—are invaluable. Think about it: your relationship with your mom or your closest friend is likely one of the most important things in your life, yet there’s no metric to measure its worth. Dr. Vivek Murthy's Parting Prescription for America beautifully reinforces this idea. His message is clear: community is the foundation of health, happiness, and fulfillment. Relationships, service, and purpose—the "triad of fulfillment"—are what truly matter. Reading his words reminded me why I made this career shift. I wanted to build community where it matters most—with real human beings whose lives and well-being depend on connection. As a future MSW graduate, I dedicate myself to fostering relationships, creating safe spaces for connection, and helping individuals and families find purpose and belonging. This work isn’t about metrics or clicks but healing, hope, and reducing loneliness. As Dr. Murthy calls on us to choose community, I can’t think of a more urgent or meaningful path forward. Relationships, service, and purpose aren’t just ideals—they’re the foundation for a life well-lived and a society that thrives. I encourage you to read Dr. Murthy’s Parting Prescription for America (https://lnkd.in/eZGmu3Fi) and reflect on how we can all prioritize relationships, service, and purpose in our lives. Let’s commit to building stronger communities—for ourselves, each other, and for the future. #MentalHealth #Community #SocialWork #RonR #ReturnOnRelationship #Purpose #Fulfillment #Connection

Reflecting on 2024: Growth, Gratitude, and Looking Ahead The Stroke is always with me—a part of my life that I didn’t choose—but I’ve committed to making the best of it, turning challenges into opportunities for growth. This year brought unexpected turns, including not gaining entry into a Master’s program. However, being accepted into Honours at Flinders University for 2025 has been a significant milestone, validating the importance of lived experience in driving meaningful research, codesign, and advocacy. I’ve had the privilege of contributing to stroke research and health services as someone with lived experience (though I’m passionate about evolving the language beyond “consumer”). Working alongside inspiring professionals, exceptional mentors, and dedicated peers has deepened my understanding and strengthened my resolve to create change. As I prepare for 2025, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead and the potential for collaboration with the network of researchers, clinicians, and advocates I’ve connected with this year. If you’re interested in partnering on projects focused on codesign, lived experience in research, or stroke recovery, I’d love to hear from you. Here’s to a new year of growth, resilience, and impactful collaboration. Let’s continue to drive change together. #strokerecovery #strokesurvivor #stroke #strokerehabilitation #strokeresearch #codesign #braininjury #braininjuryawareness #braininjurysurvivor #rehabilitation #health #wellness #genyusnetwork #strokefoundation #brainhealth #acquiredbraininjury #sexualidentitypoststroke #returntowork

Valerie, systems and you're also your international experience when you have listen to what we've discussed so far. Where do you say, okay, there already are lessons here. And, opportunities for us to start to innovate in ways that can save time and deliver greater health care practices or services directly to patients, because that's the goal. Definitely. That's the goal. And increasing access to care at the forefront as well. So pulling on some of the comments you made Sue and Mary as well, is thinking through decision making. And I think the current system is not only scared of making a mistake, but scared of making decisions that are significant enough to make an impact, to change the course of patient care. And a lot of what they're doing in Nova Scotia is redesigning the health care system, thinking through the administrative burden, but also thinking through who is caring for the patient and who at the forefront is enabling that patient to get the care they need early on in the system. I think our health care system is very well suited to you being very sick. If you need a heart transplant or if you need open heart surgery, you're going to be cared for very well and you'll be discharged and you'll go home feeling much better. But if you have a need for a primary care physician, you could wait for weeks. And if you have early stage cancer, you could wait for years to be diagnosed. And then it's too late. You're already stage three, stage four, and it's too late in your journey to actually be cared for efficiently. And so we care for the sick, but not really for prevention and for the public health at the core. So making difficult decisions is going to be key to actually enabling the primary care and keeping the population healthy, which is challenging. It's an election cycle, right? So every four years, politicians need to be reelected into a decision making process. And it takes more than four years to make a huge impact on changing the health care system. Continuing the Get to Know our Fellow's series! 👋 We asked fellows a few questions to get a better understanding of their life experience - how their fellowship has made them look at the world and their own communities differently. We'll be sharing their responses over the next few weeks. If you're interesting in becoming a fellow or learning more about the Fund for Global Health, visit our website. Meet fellow Vivien Wambugu Provide a brief description of yourself. (EX: what you're studying, your career, future career plans, fellowship responsibilities). I am currently working as a Postgraduate Associate at the Yale School of Medicine. Describe one significant thing you’ve learned throughout your fellowship. As an advocate and having the opportunity to participate in the background work necessary to influence foreign aid operations, I am certainly learning a lot. One significant thing I am learning is the importance of civilian advocacy in ensuring and empowering the "right" individuals to sit at the table in order to achieve change that significantly benefits and elevates those we strive to serve and uplift. Civil society and civilian voices remain the backbone and should/must continue to be empowered. Reflecting on your experience as a fellow, describe how your perspective on international primary healthcare has changed. How has your personal experience with the US primary healthcare system shaped your perspective? Although I did my master's in Global Health, and many of my passions and efforts fall into this field, I am constantly learning ways to advance health equity for all, especially those who are underserved and disempowered. When thinking about the benefits of PEPFAR services being integrated into primary healthcare settings, my understanding of the importance of holistic primary care in international and US healthcare systems is heightened. My personal experience with the US healthcare system is that it seems to be becoming more and more specialized and siloed rather than working to achieve quality comprehensive care. I think we, those who participate, lead, or influence the US healthcare system, can learn a lot from international settings and initiatives like the PEPFAR primary care integration goal, where primary care works to address all aspects of health, including prevention, promotion, and education, work in a collaborative and integrative manner. #healthcare #globalhealth #advocacy

We offer our thanks to Psychedelic Health Equity Initiative, a Friend Sponsor of the 16th annual Horizons: Perspectives on Psychedelic conference on May 8-11 at the New York Academy of Medicine. The Psychedelic Health Equity Initiative (PHEI) strives to enhance the well-being of marginalized individuals by promoting equitable access to effective psychedelic medicines and therapies. Our mission is to develop tools for increased access to psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) in marginalized communities. Through our field map and database, we aim to boost visibility and connections among leaders and organizations driving the psychedelic health equity movement. We actively seek collaboration with community leaders, service providers, and organizations involved in PAT equity and access. Acknowledging that collaboration and learning are crucial, we recognize the value of engaging with diverse communities. Our primary objectives include identifying philanthropic investment opportunities to fund demonstration projects, encouraging broader support from governments, private sectors, and foundations for equitable access in marginalized communities. You can learn more about PHEI at https://lnkd.in/efhZ69PF. We hope that you will join us and PHEI in May at Horizons.
