🚀 Exciting Progress in Open Source Manufacturing! 🚀 Glad to share my contribution to a recent journal publication in Zeitschrift für Wirtschaftliche Fabrikbetrieb (ZWF), which is reknown for production engineering in Germany, with its first issue appearing in 1956 :O ! Our paper introduces the design and development of an open source automatic tool changer (ATC)—a crucial element for fully automating complex manufacturing processes. While open source machine tools (OSMT) are making advanced manufacturing more accessible, an open source ATC has been a missing piece—until now. ATCs are essential for seamless tool transitions, allowing for efficient and continuous production. What does sovereign manufacturing capability look like in a world of automated manufacturing processes? Motors and microcontrollers. Step 1: Building the machines that make the machines. Developing silicon manufacture and electric motor production using parts from international suppliers. Step 2: Replacing the existing tool-chain with locally made silicon and motors. Step 3: Use locally produced micros and motors to develop commercial and industrial robotics to deliver high production rates with low wage costs. (Russell Mineral Equipment, Crest Robotics, Automated Solutions Australia P/L, Max Morin ) Step 4 (optional): Let's stop exporting lithium to china and then re-importing it as batteries. I bet there's a robot that could do that job... Technology Innovation Institute just introduced Falcon Mamba 7B!! What's new? Tansformers have been the MVP of the LLM world, but due to the quadratic complexity of the attention mechanism they face significant limitations —they just can’t handle processing long sequences without breaking a sweat (or your GPU). 🔥💻 While several alternative architectures (pure and hybrid) have attempted to overcome these limitations, they always lag in performance. Enter Falcon Mamba 🐍💥 Falcon Mamba 7B is a pure Mamba architecture model with no attention😀. It demonstrates that state-of-the-art performance can be achieved without relying on the Transformer or any hybrid architecture. In fact, Falcon Mamba is the first attention-free model to reach—or even outperform—state-of-the-art Transformers like Llama 3.1 8B and Mistral 7B across multiple benchmarks. 📊🏆 Proud to have worked with an incredibly talented team at the Technology Innovation Institute for the release of Falcon Mamba 7B! 🦅🐍 🎯 Key Highlights: • Handles arbitrary long sequence lengths with constant memory and time requirements: ▪︎ It achieves infinite context length due to its ability to sequentially process a context (previous tokens) by compressing the sequence into a fixed-size latent hidden space, independent of the sequence length. This ensures that the time required for generating the next token remains constant, no matter how many tokens have been generated before. ▪︎ It has been trained on a context length up to 8192 tokens, and it will be scaled to larger context so that it captures long range dependencies. • Falcon Mamba 7B was trained on a dataset of ~5500GT mostly from Refined-Web but also including math, reasoning and code datasets. • Base model outperforms several SoTA Transformer models across diverse benchmarks. • A first instruction-tuned version is released to serve as a demo.
