How does UK tech compete with the US? By focusing on private markets. 🇬🇧 There’s no arguing that the UK has an abundance of tech talent. From DeepMind to Wayve, there’s a proliferation of innovation coming out of Silicon Fen, London and elsewhere in the country. Microsoft’s recent decision to open an AI hub in London is further evidence. Due to an abundance of innovative talent the UK tech sector is thriving. Hubs such as Silicon Fen, London and other areas of the UK have proven to be hotbeds of innovation yet many companies opt to list in the US instead of the UK. Tempted by higher valuations, increased trading volumes and access to greater access to capital, the UK appears to have a growing problem of retaining the mentioned talent. This article dives into how through leveraging American investment, improving scaleup funding, and adopting modern distribution models, UK firms can grow and attract international investors, bridging the gap with US tech giants. I literally laughed when I read this headline. It's like the U.S. switched to mercantilism overnight. Big tech is reporting record earnings, record market cap, and record balance sheets, and some STILL want to subsidize them. Good grief. I've been calling for tech, trade, and investment restrictions with adversaries for many years, but let's not be ridiculous. Big tech literally has more money than it knows what to do with, and the USG is essentially insolvent from an operational perspective--operating at huge deficits year after year, and borrowing to pay debt, so it might be a good idea to quit borrowing money from the future to give to those who have the most of it today. If we absolutely must attempt to buy votes with subsidies, then invest a bit more in basic R&D, spread it around more, and if anything favor the small firms rather than the monopolies and oligopolies. Surreal. More demand has translated to higher prices, record earnings, and no need for government intervention of any kind whatsoever--especially subsidies.

United Kingdom: The UK could lead the field in tech talent but it is wasting the opportunity. Britain is being outpaced by both the USA and EU in the race towards computing and engineering supremacy. Both the US and the EU have announced their intention to fund multi-billion dollar projects building new, onshore semiconductor supply chains to reduce reliance on Taiwan. The UK is dilly-dallying. We could, in theory, become a powerhouse of computing and engineering talent, given our strong university sector. But the relevant courses seem to be of interest almost exclusively to Chinese students, most of whom go straight home after their degrees. Meanwhile, British students pay as much to study computer science as they cough up for a course in drama and theatre studies. It shouldn’t take a super-duper advanced algorithm to figure out that this doesn’t make sense.

Time for the Middle East to assess its tech standing amid the US-China tech standoff. Thriving means investing in education, fostering innovation, and navigating global partnerships strategically. The starting point (Q1) and end point (Q2) of this analysis are completely off the mark. How to analyze mainland China's technology industry with a purely Western universalist point of view? The way China regulates its tech industry can seem highly unpredictable. The government can celebrate the achievements of Chinese tech companies one day and then turn against them the next. But there are patterns in how China approaches regulating tech, argues Angela Huyue Zhang, a law professor at Hong Kong University and author of the new book High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy. The way Chinese policies change almost always follow a three-phase progression: a lax approach where companies are given relative flexibility to expand and compete, sudden harsh crackdowns that slash profits, and eventually a new loosening of restrictions. https://lnkd.in/evfWgyFj
