We've long known that ferns were the first to establish on many landscapes following the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs, and that they were abundant and widespread for centuries or more. Ferns are also some of the first species to recolonize after smaller upheavals like the Mt. Saint Helens eruption. For decades, it's been thought that this was due to their ability to withstand harsh conditions or out-compete other plants. But what if ferns aren't just better at living through tough times, they're also paving the way for other plants to follow? I'm excited to share a new paper, led by my former postdoc Lauren Azevedo-Schmidt, PhD and based on a NASA-funded collaboration with Emily Sessa, Jarmila Pittermann, Ellen Currano, and Regan Dunn. In our new conceptual framework, we suggest that ferns may not just be better competitors, or so-called "disaster taxa," but may play an important role in facilitating ecological recovery. 🦕 Just completed a small data challenge on Dinosaur Data Analysis! 🦖 🔍 In this challenge, I had the opportunity to explore a fascinating dataset containing information about various dinosaurs, including their names, heights, ages, and more. I tackled questions ranging from data cleaning to correlation analysis and discovered some intriguing insights along the way. 📊 I started by handling missing values using different imputation techniques such as mean, mode, and median. This ensured that the dataset was ready for analysis without compromising the integrity of the data. 📈 With the data cleaned, I delved into exploring correlations between different attributes. I uncovered interesting relationships, including the correlation between dinosaur height and age. It was fascinating to see how dinosaur sizes varied over time! 🏔️ One of the standout findings was identifying the tallest and shortest dinosaurs in the dataset. It's incredible to imagine these colossal creatures roaming the Earth millions of years ago! 🦖 Overall, it was a fun and educational challenge, and I'm excited to continue exploring more datasets and uncovering hidden insights. One of the best techniques for kids, especially visual learners, is using flashcards. Here, my son and I were playing with dinosaur and flashcards, exploring what happened millions of years ago. We imagined the sounds of Parasaurolophus communicating through their horn-like crests, used Stegosaurus plates for defense, and stood tall like Brachiosaurus to "eat" the whole forest. Why Flashcards: Flashcards helped us embed facts into our game, including how humans would have looked next to these giants. They also offer many benefits: Improving memory, enhancing active recall, promoting active learning, and making study sessions more interactive and engaging. How dinosaurs helped us create awareness! 🦕🦖✨ We just crossed the World Autism Awareness Month and we distributed Inesh Guha’s dinosaur themed keychains in cafes and here are 5 key takeaways: Clear Approach: Knowing exactly what to say is like having a clear picture that others easily understand. Curiosity: Inesh made special keychains with dinosaurs on them. These keychains were not just for holding keys. They were like magic leaving everyone curious. "My Research Year in Brief" 2023 has been a remarkable year in dinosaur research for me. Here are some of the highlights: - Honoured as the Australian Top Researcher in Palaeontology for the second consecutive year. - Successfully doubled the number of citizen science projects, now actively leading 10 Australian fossil track sites. - Secured funding from notable organisations, Stantec and Batchfire. - Ended a 6-year hiatus from conferences with a triumphant return, winning the Best Video Presentation award. - Advanced the application of Blender 3D Software, utilising it not just for modelling and animation but also as a powerful research tool in palaeontology.

How do you unlock passion & curiosity in kids? 🤔 I really don't think it's through us as parents. So what is the solution? My two cents: if we can have mentors and role models in our professional lives (and we often seek them out), why shouldn't our kids as well? 💡 My 11 year old is OBSESSED with dinosaurs - he could talk about dinosaurs all day long and pretty much has since he's been 2! But as a parent, I'm not able to support him since I don't know much about dinosaurs and I have no idea how to help nurture that passion. Enter Curious Cardinals. Curious Cardinals is a mentorship platform that matches K-12 kids with brilliant college mentors based on our kids' interest areas and personality to help unlock passion & curiosity. My son has 2 Curious Cardinals mentors, one is an archaeology major from Princeton who fuels Max's passion for dinosaurs through a research project, building a dinosaur exhibit, essay writing on dinosaurs, and more. (The other is a math major from Harvard who helps support Max with academics). And the secondary benefit is that he has two amazing near-peer role models that he looks up to who can also show him the path.
