It was great to share our journey at the recently concluded cyber, controls and risk conference #CCR2024 in brussels. Key Topics which I shared and resonated with the room - Establish/understand the overall objectives for your firm first and then align the risks and control/compliance activities. In some cases, eaiser said than done however not knowing your north star vision and aligning with your firm's purpose would result in a hollow risk management strategy. - Establish TRUST with your 1st line teams as they are the reason for your existence ( they pay our salaries). Reduce "friction" in thier workflow and when that's done effectively, automation is a by-product. - Digital GRC architecture needs the world of security and compliance to come together and I explained our journey in breaking those silos. How do you measure the success of your TPRM program? What’s the metric? What’s the okr look like? Is it more due diligence performed? Is it a matter of scale? Is it some sort of quantified risk reduction? Maybe it’s a lack of breaches or issues (this is horrible btw…). Or perhaps it’s the integration you have with other teams like procurement, legal, or enterprise risk? I’m biased from my Cigital days, but I believe one of the best ways to measure your success and see if you’re headed in the right direction is with a maturity model. When you’re thinking about an entire program there are a lot of tools, business processes, people, teams, and policies involved. At Cigital we did this with the BSIMM for software security initiatives and even though it was one of our cheapest services, it was one of the most strategically effective.
