PROJECT MANAGERS YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS I had a conversation with someone some time ago who happened to be a developer with an education background in estate valuation. We started discussing the cost of building materials and their effect on the quality of work around Nigeria. I mentioned a particular project I let go of because the client wanted to pay too little. To my astonishment, this guy said he hasn't let go of any projects for the past three years. He said the amount of money you have will determine the quality you get. He mentioned 10 major things he would remove from the foundation. He talked about reducing the foundation concrete from 200mm to 100mm. He talked about not taking all the foundation walls from the foundation. He said he would reduce the oversite concrete, commonly called the German floor, to 75mm. He talked about reducing all the internal walls to 150mm and removing the roof beam entirely. He said nothing like reinforced column and the lintel will be short form. I can't go ahead and write all the remaining points here because I was dumbfounded. I couldn't comprehend this. Some of the items he mentioned cutting out are my core values. I normally dig every wall from the foundation and do my casting with a minimum of 200mm. I fill my foundation block holes with weak concrete to strengthen them, and my oversite concrete is a minimum of 100mm to 150mm. Some of us let certain projects go because we can't compromise our core values and standards. I want to inform some clients that getting it cheaper does not mean you are getting the same value. Many contractors can compromise standards and only work with what you agree to pay. So next time you rejoice that you got it cheaper, check to see if they didn't reduce the 10 core elements from your project. Some contractors with an engineering background can't compromise on core standards and may not be able to take on certain projects. Before you brag about getting it cheaper, check if you are getting the same value. Be prepared to pay more to get better value. #repost #WOli #WOlithegreatbuilder #ConstructionEngineer
