Genuine Question , how has no industry leader called out career coaches who are endorsing unpaid employment for their own visibility and brand exposure??? International students, when was the last time you heard that someone got a sponsored work permit after working unpaid for X number of months?? If you know someone who has managed to be successful with this tactic , please do enlighten me because it defies all common sense and logic.

Secondments -- Are they a Career Maker or Career Breaker? The answer...? They can be either, it all depends on how you approach them. Lask week I asked you which topics you'd like me to talk more about and the topic of 'how to navigate a secondment' is currently in the lead. It makes sense because so many people who I talk to on here work for large companies where secondment opportunities are more likely to occur. I'm a huge fan of secondments. 🦘They give you an opportunity to try working in a different team or function without having to commit to a permanent move 🏃🏽You can learn new skills and create more breadth in your skill set (which is also incredibly useful if you decide to move into a leadership role) 😀They broaden your network 🦺You get to keep the security of your permanent role while trying the new one and (most people don't talk about this one, its a bit Valdermort-y) 🤹🏽You can move into a function that an external company is unlikely to hire you for, because they can see your skills and company know-how are transferable That's a lot to like! BUT, they are not all sunshine and rainbows. - Sometimes promises are made that aren't kept. - Sometimes you end up caught in the middle, doing your old job and your new job So what's my top tip when it comes to navigating a secondment? 💥💥💥Do it with intention💥💥💥 Yes, the attention and being offered a secondment is exciting. Yes, the idea of something new is exciting and triggers a dopamine rush Yes, you get the chance to try something new. And -- you need to be clear on -- Why you are doing it -- What you are hoping to experience and achieve and -- What will it bring to you and your career. We can negotiate a lot of the terms of your secondment. The training. We can negotiate the responsibilities. The timing. Higher duties allowance. All of it is negotiable But before we get to that part, we need to work out the intention behind considering the secondment, and if it's a good fit for YOU. Do you have any more questions about secondments?

Orientation versus Orienting I've had the pleasure of starting a number of positions with some incredible companies in my career, most recently with Forum for International Trade Training (FITT). Each new position comes with a sense of excitement for the journey ahead, but also some nerves of course. One of the things I've learned is that there is a big difference between a company's Onboarding program, and actually orienting oneself to the new company and position. Orientation programs, while incredibly helpful, usually only deal with the "what and why" (what is the role, what do we do, why do we do it, etc). Orienting oneself to the new company has more to do with the "how". How will you orient yourself to the business, its employees, and its customers? How can you use your experience to benefit the organization in both the short and long term? How will you address your shortcomings within the new organization? That last point is incredibly important, as you're never going to be a 100% fit for any position or any organization. You should connect with all stakeholders and start building relationships that will help you both achieve some quick wins but also identify and potentially help address your own weak spots. I would highly recommend "The First 90 Days" by Michael Watkins for anyone about to start on a new employment journey. A very helpful resource.

Human Resources Manager | HR Consultant | Blogger at HR Power by Rachel LLB, CHRM, PCIR... yes, I am a lawyer in HR and I love it! :)
Happy Tuesday!!! New hires outthere: 🔹️ The orientation session is where you get first hand info on the Company's policies and procedures, this is also an excellent opportunity to ask your questions. Note a few facts below: ✅️ Once you go trough Orientation and you receive copies of the various policies you will be held accountable. Arguing that you did not pay attention and/or did not read the policy will not release you from your responsibility ✅️ Companies literally give you the does and don'ts during orientation, pay attention as this info might come in hand in the future. ✅️ Asking questions about things that were discussed in Orientation months after makes you look unprofessional. Exhaust all your questions during Orientation or reach out to HR shortly after if you need more info on a particular topic.
