#PublicFeedback Sought on Potential Licensing for #PrivateRentalHousing in #Leeds. #ResidentsofLeeds are invited to participate in discussions regarding a proposed new licensing system for privately rented housing. Initiated by #LeedsCityCouncil, this follows the introduction of ‘#SelectiveLicensing’ in #Beeston and #Harehills in 2020, which was aimed at improving the quality of rental homes and addressing social and health disparities within these communities. The initial scheme has shown promising outcomes; however, according to the #HousingAct2004, selective licensing in #England is limited to five years. Consequently, the council is now evaluating a broader initiative that would not only revisit #Beeston and #Harehills but also extend to include areas of #Armley, #Holbeck, #Hunslet, #CrossGreen, and #EastEndPark. #Leeds is proactive in addressing the diverse housing needs of its population. Alongside new development, the city is renovating existing properties to meet modern standards of living. Things are about to change in Burnaby! The City of Burnaby has released an initial draft land use plan map for their ongoing OCP update project 'Burnaby 2050', which envisions simplified land use designations that correspond to brand new zoning districts. One of the main policy objectives is to introduce 'clarity and usability' in the rezoning process. Burnaby is also overhauling their entire Zoning Bylaw and intends on scrapping a density/FSR based zoning approach to a "height-based development framework". I've done my best to summarize these changes as well as additional work being done around a new density bonus policy, and policy "overlays" which could include rental tenure requirements for some sites. https://lnkd.in/g-jVirXX

Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects [LOHA] are expanding the definition for permanent supportive housing in Los Angeles As California’s housing crisis has worsened, officials here have been working to make more underutilized land parcels available to affordable housing developers in the form of inexpensive leases. But these sites hadn’t been developed for a reason— many were lying on sites with difficult terrain, split into separate pieces, or sitting along heavy traffic corridors or even next to freeways. The 35,000-square-foot, 54-unit permanent supportive housing development for the formerly homeless, called Isla Intersections (both for its busy “island” location and for its intersection of housing, sustainability, and equity), is a potent model of what’s doable in housing if we’re willing to expand our definition of what’s possible. https://lnkd.in/ehcMnxQT

I recently listened to Governor Newsom's town hall with victims of the Eaton and Palisades fires, and one topic that stuck with me was the fear of change in rebuilding efforts. Change can be scary, especially after experiencing a traumatic event like the wildfires. It's natural to want things to go back to the way they were. But sometimes, change can bring positive opportunities, especially when it comes to rebuilding our communities. Just because a structure is different from what was there before doesn't necessarily mean it will have a negative impact. In fact, it could even improve things. For example, a multi-family unit doesn't have to be a monstrous eyesore. It could be a beautifully designed building that complements the neighborhood's character while providing much-needed housing. As Daniel Parolek so eloquently describes in his book, "Missing Middle Housing," there's a spectrum of housing options between single-family homes and large apartment complexes that can inject vitality into communities while maintaining their unique charm. These options include: Single-family homes with ADUs Duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes Bungalow and cottage courts Courtyard apartments Mixed-use complexes We can use this opportunity to make things function better. We can incorporate sustainable building practices, create more resilient structures, and design spaces that foster community and connection.
