#FAFSAfiasco update: For many months there have been concerns expressed about the update to the simplified #FAFSA that no longer considers the number of family members enrolled in college. Concerns have been largely met with a shrug by the designers of the simplified FAFSA. So, here's a specific example of what colleges are going to need to address. We have a currently enrolled first-year student who had an #EFC of $48,000 last year. The same student has a sibling applying for fall of 2024 and that student has an #SAI of $52,000. If number in college were still considered in the formula, the currently enrolled student would have an EFC of $25,000 and presumably the sibling would have an SAI/EFC of $27,000. Instead, it's likely both will have an SAI of $52,000 and we will have to sort it out on our own. Here's the practical application: 1. Family income is approximately: $215,000 2. FAFSA simplification with two SAI's of $50,000+ suggests that nearly 50% of family income should go to college costs. 3. Prior to FAFSA Simplification about 25% of family income would go to college costs. Colleges will no longer have a standardized approach to this and there is bound to be inconsistency in approach because of this known flaw in the formula. I understand that this is a high income family and there may not be a lot of sympathy out there for the challenge of addressing this. I know that we will have similar instances that involve Pell and MAP eligibility. I will share those examples in due season.
