Happy International Women’s Day! Coincidentally, today, I had the privilege of attending the first Master class session of the SDGs Advocate Programme, Cohort 5. I was enlightened on the evolution and concept of sustainable development. So I found it quite appealing to note how the theme of today’s IWD named “Investing in women: Accelerate progress” which aims to inspire inclusion, intentionally mirrors one of the 17 sustainable development goals; Gender equality. I have come to understand that the 17 sustainable development goals and dare I say, and as many more to come, are and will continually be grounded on three (3) core principles; environmental sustainability, social equity and economic prosperity. Furthermore, I learnt more about renewable and clean energy from the day’s class which was brilliantly presented by Mr. Fisayo Adeyemi in an unorthodox manner. Following the evolution of sustainable development, it is impossible not to adequately acknowledge and appreciate what the United Nations has been able to accomplish thus far.

The UN adopted the “Pact for the Future” last week, which is a historic step toward making global decision-making more inclusive, especially for younger and future generations 🌐 This agreement is another positive sign of how foresight and long-term thinking are gaining real momentum on the world stage. 💡 One of the most exciting parts of the Pact is its commitment to giving future generations a voice in today’s decisions. It emphasizes youth participation and urges leaders to consider the long-term impact of their actions on those who will inherit the world. While we can't know exactly what future generations will want, we can at least try to put ourselves in their shoes and work to leave the world in a better place. As with many big agreements, the Pact is full of big promises—like ending hunger, achieving gender equality, and promoting peace—but it doesn’t always spell out how to achieve these goals. Still, the broad support it received shows a growing desire to do things differently and create a more inclusive, fair, and sustainable future At ANTICIPATE, we work to democratize the futures, helping to shape better futures for everyone. We believe in being diplomats for these better futures, advocating for the world we want to pass on ✍️ #foresight #futures #futuregenerations #summitofthefuture

International Women's Day empowers us to strive for a world where every woman can thrive. It encourages individuals and organisations to reflect on their roles in promoting gender equality and to take action towards positive change. Women form a substantial portion of the waste sector worldwide, contributing to both economic and environmental sustainability. In many companies/communities, they are the backbone of waste management initiatives, utilising innovative methods to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. These initiatives empower women economically and socially, providing opportunities for education and skill development while addressing environmental challenges. Additionally, women-led organisations and initiatives advocate for improved waste management policies and empower women in the sector. Recognising and supporting the contributions of women in waste is crucial for promoting gender equality and achieving sustainable development Here’s to strong women: May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.

This International Women’s Day let's take a moment to appreciate the commitment, resilience, sacrifices and accomplishments of women around us. In this recognition, the first woman that comes in mind, is my wife. The constant jugglery and balancing she maintains daily between her professional duties, home, and parenting responsibilities is no small feat. As a first-hand witness to her efforts, I can testify to the challenges she overcomes, day in and day out and that makes me value and appreciate other working women. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with some amazing, talented, and hardworking women. Despite societal pressures, discrepancies, and naysayers, they carved out their unique paths and triumphed. The obstacles they have scaled, the barriers they have shattered, their achievements are all worthy of appreciation and recognition. They have proven their doubters wrong and defied the odds, setting inspiring examples for others to follow. I now understand the importance of sharing responsibilities. More of us, especially men, need to step up, provide support, and create an environment conducive for the women in our lives -- be it our wives, daughters, sisters, or female colleagues to attain their dreams and potential. So, this Women’s Day, let’s pledge to not only appreciate the women around us but also to help lighten their load. Gender equality begins with sharing responsibilities. Here's to not just speaking but acting in favor of empowerment and equality - today, tomorrow, and every day.
