I shared one of my secrets as a professional in this post. Please read this if you are a Project Manager or Team lead. As a Project Manager, I have been privileged to lead diverse teams to success. Looking back, one of my secrets is understanding the strength domain of my team members and leveraging them. Whether you like it or not, the kind of people you will have on your team can never be the same and that is why as a project manager, you need to be familiar with different personality types and strength domains that exist, because this will help you when assigning tasks within your team. A piece of advice that I usually give professionals like me is encouraging their team members to take personality and strength tests to uncover their unique strengths and preferences. It's surprising how much these insights can enhance team dynamics and project outcomes. Understanding each team member's strengths allows me to tailor task assignments effectively, ensuring everyone feels valued and capable in their roles. As a manager, one of the toughest challenges I faced was dismissing a project proposed by a very enthusiastic team member because it didn't align with our company's goals. Here's how I did it without dampening their spirit 👇 Acknowledge and appreciate ↳ I started by genuinely acknowledging their hard work and the creativity of their proposal. This helped maintain their enthusiasm and confidence. Clarify strategic goals ↳ I explained the reasons the project didn't align with our current strategic goals, making sure to communicate this clearly to avoid confusion and to help them understand the decision from a business perspective. Redirect their energy ↳ I suggested alternative ways they could contribute, aligning their strengths and interests with projects that support our strategic objectives. Encourage continuous innovation ↳ I encouraged them to keep thinking innovatively, reinforcing that while not every idea might be the right fit, their creativity is highly valued and crucial to our success. Propose a new project ↳ I proposed another project that better aligned with our strategic goals, and the results were fantastic. This not only redirected their enthusiasm into a productive avenue but also demonstrated the importance of aligning with the company's broader objectives. Reflect and adjust ↳ Recognizing that my initial mistake was not stopping the misaligned project at the very beginning, I committed to always ensuring alignment before starting any new projects. This experience reinforced the importance of clear communication and strategic alignment from the outset.
