Our summer interns had an exciting day connecting with the PCSD team and learning about the ins and outs of charter school development last month! 🌟 The day kicked off with a virtual Meet & Greet where the interns met our fantastic staff from the Bay Area and Washington state offices. They also had the chance to chat with Akil Manley, who walked them through the process of finding the perfect site for a charter school. The day wrapped up with a delicious lunch in DTLA, hosted by John Sun and Stephanie Guerrero. Curious to learn more? When is the right time to start thinking about applying to college if your child is a current junior/rising senior? I would say it depends on what your goals are. Reasonable goals for your child this time of year: finish out the junior year with as high a GPA as possible. Take the spring SAT with a view to retaking it in the fall if the scores do not match the required scores of the colleges your child wants to get into. Study for AP exams, aiming for a 4 or 5 (not all colleges will accept a 3.) Enjoy graduation festivities. Then: with your child, plan out the summer based on how to best augment their application. Do they need to retake the SAT? Take an SAT prep class for the new digital format. Can a family friend help out with the right summer internship that aligns with your child's goals and interests? As this UVA student notes, middle-class students are stuck between earning too much to qualify for grants and not earning enough to pay for college costs. https://buff.ly/4du7W5U Families can explore options to lower costs like earning credits in HS (AP, dual enrollment), community college pathways, co-ops & paid internships, private scholarships, and careful college selection.

MDRC report highlights new findings from a random assignment evaluation of the first seven P-TECH Grades 9–14 schools in New York City. Conducted by a Network research team at MDRC, the study is the first rigorous evaluation of the P-TECH model and provides findings related to impact, implementation, and costs. P-TECH 9–14 schools collaborate with local colleges to enable students to earn a high school diploma within four years followed by a cost-free, industry-recognized associate’s degree. During the six-year program, employer partners provide students with work-based learning experiences such as internships, mentoring, and job shadowing. This report provides three years of post-high school follow-up, including during the pandemic. Previous reports from the study showed that P-TECH students earned more credits, passed more New York State Regents exams, and were much more likely to take college courses and earn college credits in high school than comparison group students. New findings in this report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic.
