As we approach the two-year anniversary of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, I’m reminded of significant large-scale battery projects under construction, such as CS Energy’s Greenbank Battery project in Logan. This project will play a crucial role in stabilising renewable assets on our grid. Work is progressing rapidly on-site, and once the battery becomes operational in 2025, it will enhance grid reliability and drive further improvements and efficiencies across the network. This project will feature 108 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, all of which were recently delivered and will work to alleviate pressure on our grid by balancing power supply, smoothing out demand peaks, and facilitating load shifting. The benefits extend beyond enhancing grid stability and reliability. Large-scale batteries stimulate economic activity, reduce energy prices, and create jobs and employment pathways for locals—essential as we transition to a clean energy future and build out our SuperGrid. Equally important is fostering a diverse and dynamic battery sector that supports this transition. Our department is focused on realising the Queensland Battery Industry Strategy 2024–2029. This will outline how the government will work with businesses, industry, and research institutions to achieve a thriving battery industry. JFK International Airport’s New Terminal One to host largest airport microgrid in US. The 12-megawatt microgrid comprises solar, fuel cells and battery energy storage that can power half of the terminal’s daily operations, airport and project officials said.Construction has begun on New York City’s largest solar array to date, comprising over 13,000 solar panels on the roof of John F. Kennedy International Airport’s New Terminal One as part of a 12-megawatt microgrid. AlphaStruxure is taking charge of construction, operations and maintenance of the microgrid, installing raceways for cables that will connect 6.63 megawatts of solar power generated by the panels to the microgrid, according to a joint announcement Tuesday by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK’s New Terminal One, the consortium responsible for the airport terminal’s overall design, development and construction. This array will be the largest at any airport terminal nationwide, per their news release. The microgrid will recover heat from the fuel cells to generate chilled water and hot water, generating enough electricity to power half of the terminal’s daily operations, PANYNJ said. AlphaStruxure is financing the microgrid project through an energy-as-a-service contract to ensure predictable operating costs and performance, without any upfront capital expenditures to PANYNJ or the New Terminal One. CleanCo Queensland’s Swanbank site (pictured) has been generating electricity for Queensland for more than 50 years. Now it’s set for a new era as a Clean Energy Hub and home to a 250MW/500MWh battery. Today, along with Tesla and Yurika, CleanCo started construction on what's going to be one of our state's biggest batteries when complete. When the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing, the Swanbank Battery will store enough clean energy to power the equivalent of two-thirds of Ipswich homes for two hours during peak demand periods. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is designed for 24/7 operation, with remote capabilities, ensuring consistent and controllable clean energy supply to the Queensland SuperGrid. Through the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund, we have provided $330 million to this project, which will create around 60 jobs during construction and up to 10 full-time jobs in operation. With the BESS set to arrive later this year, CleanCo plans to have the site energised by mid-2025. I'll be speaking on Thursday, 11am about the importance of CER integrated planning approaches, and specifically the role the community played in one of our cornerstone innovation & resilience projects, the Bawley Point and Kioloa Community Microgrid. Abstract: "The Bawley Point, Kioloa and Termeil communities are home to over 1,000 connected customers and located at the extreme southern end of Endeavour Energy’s franchise area. Being at the very end of the line, electricity services at these communities experience high SAIDI and SAIFI values. The area is also susceptible to storms and bushfires, and customers experienced over 11 days of outages during the black summer bushfires. Additionally, the area is a very popular tourist destination, and energy demand can increase 5x during peak holiday periods. Historically the network has been supplemented using a 1MVA diesel generator for ‘peak-shaving’ and voltage support. While the establishment of a new zone substation was a possible solution, it would still rely on connection of overhead lines through bushland - leaving the community’s electricity service vulnerable to fires and storms. To meet the growing demand for energy in this area and provide a more reliable and resilient supply, Endeavour have worked extensively with the community to develop a novel microgrid solution that will allow the local network to be re-energise during outages and allow a future proof solution integration of CER. The microgrid includes the installation of a ~2.8MW/2.8MWh grid-forming battery, automated switch gear and an orchestrated network of over 134 household batteries and solar systems co-funded by the community and the Federal and NSW government's Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund. To help manage operations and forecast through the microgrid includes a Virtual Power Plant (Evergen) and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS mPrest). Under normal conditions the components of the microgrid operate as part of the wider grid but can switch to independent operation when outages occur, delivering power to customers’ homes with minimal interruption. The microgrid offers immediate benefits to the community by providing a more reliable and secure electricity service, increased hosting capacity and use of local renewable energy." Nemo Link Limited is delighted to have received this week Ofgem’s determination of the first End of Period Assessment (EPA) under the #capandfloor. (Link to publication 👉 : https://lnkd.in/eFNSdxG5)   🏆 Nemo Link is the #first interconnector to reach this key milestone, as a pilot project for the cap and floor regime, achieving a remarkable cumulative five-year revenue of 💸 £185 million above the cap. In 2022, £117 million was returned to consumers and now an additional £68 million is allocated, shared equally between BE and GB consumers 🎉 . 📌 Ofgem’s cap and floor regime was established to incentivise the development of electricity interconnectors in Great Britain. Octopus Energy and National Grid agreement speeds up low carbon tech installations. Octopus Energy and National Grid have introduced a new process to speed up the installation low carbon technologies, such electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and domestic batteries. The additional power required by these devices can mean that the fuse on the incoming electricity supply would need to be upgraded by the local distribution network operator. Under the new agreement Octopus Energy engineers will be permitted to undertake the necessary upgrade, removing a step in the process that could add up to 10 weeks to the installation time...
