WtERT® Joins the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to Champion Climate Action and Sustainable Waste Management We're excited to announce that the Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT®) is now officially part of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an initiative founded by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University. WtERT® will work within SDSN to champion Waste-to-Energy (WtE) as a key infrastructure solution to mitigate climate change. With methane’s warming impact more than 84 times that of CO₂ over a 20-year horizon, reducing landfill emissions is essential. WtERT® will contribute to advancing sustainable WtE technology to reduce landfill dependency and foster a low-carbon and circular economy for a resilient future. In collaboration with SDSN, we will share science-based data and insights to support evidence-based policies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a sustainable future for all. 🌍 Last week at the Global Water Summit 2024 in London, I had the privilege to participate in a thought-provoking Net Zero Actions Panel alongside esteemed hosts and panelists. The discussions shed light on the pivotal role of water utilities in combating climate change while emphasizing the importance of combining cost savings with carbon reduction initiatives. 🔑 One key takeaway from our dialogue was that while cost savings are a crucial incentive for mitigating emissions, they cannot solely drive action. Carbon reduction must become ingrained within organizational culture, akin to cost neutrality, to ensure its sustained implementation. 💡 It's encouraging to note that many emissions sources for water and wastewater utilities present cost reduction opportunities. For instance, we explored how advancements in digitized technology can significantly reduce Scope 2 emissions by optimizing electricity usage in water pumping systems and minimizing non-revenue water through advanced metrology infrastructure. 🚀 Additionally, we delved into the pressing issue of Scope 3 emissions stemming from infrastructure repair and new projects. Civil work and construction activities, with emissions magnitudes higher than electricity, pose a challenge to net progress. Thus, mandating preliminary digitalization of projects and leveraging innovative solutions like Smart Sewer systems can slash emissions while minimizing infrastructure needs. 💼 To accelerate progress, alternative business models with suppliers are imperative. Performance-based contracts can harness suppliers' financial resilience and efficiency gains, while incentivizing engineering partners to design low-carbon projects through monetizing avoided carbon emissions. 🌟 Financial and business agility, coupled with trust and partnership, are the bedrocks for driving transformative change in the water sector. Let's rally water utilities to prioritize GHG emissions mitigation and embrace sustainable practices. Together, we can pave the way towards a greener, more resilient future. Thank you to our great moderator, moderated by David Ponder from the US Water Alliance, and peers, partners and friends who contributed to the panel: Frederick Jeske-Schoenhoven from SUEZ, Maria Manidaki from Mott MacDonald, Bill Barber from Cambi, Alex Plant from Scottish Water, Shaun Cumming from Barwon Water, Per Holm from BlueKolding A/S, and Sophie Borgne from Schneider Electric. #NetZero #CarbonReduction #WaterUtilities #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GlobalWaterSummit #GWS2024 #letssolvewater Xylem #watercycle

World Energy Conservation Day, which was recognized on December 14, gives us a time to reflect on our collective responsibility to combat climate change. 🌍 In this #MakingAnImpactMonday post, we are highlighting our work on decarbonizing our value chain while ensuring that we honor our commitment to delivering global innovations faster to our customers. At Envu, we are dedicated to building a sustainable future. As businesses around the world prioritize energy conservation and efficiency, we’re proud to play our part in reducing our own environmental footprint and modeling that change for other companies. Although our full #decarbonization plan is not yet public, we are already making significant strides toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Our initial initiatives, such as transitioning our fleet to electric vehicles and optimizing our data storage infrastructure, are laying the groundwork for a thriving future. The final plan will be integral to our broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding our emissions profile, addressing Scope 3 emissions and promoting sustainable procurement practices. We believe that collaboration with our suppliers and customers will be pivotal to reaching our decarbonization goals. Want to learn more? We sat down with Marine Sanouiller, head of ESG at Envu, for a deeper dive into our decarbonization journey and the steps we’re taking to create lasting impact. https://lnkd.in/g6Sr5qCA #WorldEnergyConservationDay #Sustainability #ESG #CorporateSocialResponsibility
