Great that DOE is making what we already know better. Hopefully they will fund programs advancing what we don’t know. The clearest near term path is taking physics beyond the standard model. This 100+ year old understanding of how things work based of lots of statistics and uncertainty could give way to better insight on quantum noise and plasma turbulence. This would make quick work of fusion power and quantum computers. One approach is to add a spatial dimension to Minkowski space where the three spatial dimensions we know opens up into an additional dimension holding the same attributes as the initial three dimensions. These four spatial dimensions are sequentially orthogonal. A simple assumption is in play here - A space exists that is completly functional for both quantum mechanics and general relativity. Here it is proposed that Minkowski plus one space might get it done. Initial validation would use the amended Minkowski space to run Universe expansion in either the Einstein field equations or 5 dimensional string theory to fully account for the illusion of dark energy.
