I had the privilege to attend the 2nd FICCI DE&I Conclave recently, where I engaged in enlightening sessions on crucial topics shaping our workplace diversity landscape. Here are some key learnings that resonated with me: Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Understanding the pivotal role ERGs play in fostering inclusivity and belonging within organizations. Their impact extends beyond support networks to driving innovation and advocacy for underrepresented groups. Supplier Diversity and Procurement Practices: Recognizing the significance of supplier diversity as a catalyst for economic empowerment and equity. Integrating diverse suppliers not only enriches our supply chain but also reflects our commitment to supporting diverse communities. Importance of Data and Metrics: Emphasizing the role of data-driven insights in shaping effective DE&I strategies. Metrics help us measure progress, identify gaps, and implement targeted initiatives that yield tangible results in fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. Understanding and Navigating a Multigenerational Workforce: Acknowledging the diverse perspectives and strengths each generation brings to the table. Leveraging this diversity promotes collaboration, innovation, and mutual learning across different age groups. Attending these sessions reinforced my belief in the transformative power of diversity, equity, and inclusion in driving organizational success and societal impact. I am eager to apply these insights to foster a more inclusive workplace culture at Akshayashakti, where every voice is valued and empowered to thrive. ‘One Year of Growth and Transformation at Interswitch’ Today marks a significant milestone in my professional journey - one year at Interswitch East Africa As I reflect on the past 12 months, I'm filled with gratitude and pride, witnessing my tremendous growth and evolution. I embarked on this journey as a Client Relations Officer, eager to learn and contribute to the team. My initial role taught me the importance of exceptional customer service, attention to detail, effective communication and customer success. However, my aspirations and capabilities soon led me to take on new challenges. I transitioned into an Account Manager position, where I developed strong relationships with clients, managed corporate accounts, and contributed to business growth. But the most significant leap came when I ventured into Operational Risk Management. This role will allow me to combine my passion for risk management with my industry knowledge to identify and mitigate potential risks. Throughout this journey, I've acquired invaluable skills, expertise, and insights. I've learned from incredible colleagues, mentors, and leaders who have guided and supported me. I've adapted to new challenges, navigated uncertainties, and consistently pushed myself beyond my comfort zone. As I celebrate this milestone, I acknowledge: 1. 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: Inform your network of colleagues, peers, friends and family that you are seeking a board role. Networking is crucial in finding the right opportunities. 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀: Joining a board is like entering a club. It’s essential that the current members like you and see you as a good fit. Conversely, conduct your own due diligence to ensure the board aligns with your values and goals. Once you secure your first board seat, take your time before committing to additional roles. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻: Familiarise yourself with the chairman of the board. Understanding their leadership style and expectations is key. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗞𝗲𝘆: It’s not just about what you say, but how you say it. Remember to remove your executive hat when sitting on the board. After my earlier post about writing down my goals I came up with my top 3 for this year. Professionally and personally. My work goals for 2024 are... 1) Manage my time more efficiently I know I need to prioritise my workload and set better boundaries for myself and others and perhaps learn to say no to additional tasks. 2) Improve communication This is one for me to improve personally but also to make communication easier for all across my team, to and from all levels. 3) Help to create and implement effective processes and procedures This is a vital one for achieving the level of improvement I’d like to see this year. At a site team level we need to implement effective ways of ensuring everything is completed in a timely manner and to a high standard consistently and move away from “that’s the way we’ve always done it”.
