Local winners were celebrated in their regions at luncheon events, while VIP regional winners were invited to the national gala dinner. National winners, representing various job roles and prize categories were announced during what was a spectacular and entertaining evening. This year's theme "Future Fast-forward," focuses on our commitment to innovation – and it was in evidence everywhere. The venue was transformed with reflective, contemporary décor that set the mood for a magic. A violinist with a laser bow accompanied by a light show opened proceedings, mesmerizing the audience. Our Pyramid Awards programme is a key initiative in recognising and celebrating the extraordinary efforts of our people. It’s the daily hard work, focus and grit of our people that make the PnS business great. Our people are the fuel that power brands presence and growth at the point of purchase. It is personal and they act as if every brand under their care is their unique responsibility. Chicken. And egg. Phrase resonating loudly at this week’s Essex Director Magazine event for business leaders. Superbly run by Sue Wilcock. My example. Vendors want to see other vendors before committing to EnableAll Buyers want choice from a range of vendors signed up before switching. Or supplementing. Existing online habits. Even if it is the most accessible marketplace out there. Many participants shared parallel stories often in relation to accessing finance. Refreshingly different presentation approach. Focused on my experience as a business leader. Lessons learned. Scars on back explained. Disability became incidental. Of secondary focus. Slides were creative visuals to tell the story. A nodding audience provided real time feedback and motivation buttons wrapped into one. As does having to follow the brilliance of Jane Gurney. The CEO of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) Complete with visuals of bright red helicopters saving lives every day. Participants pre-perceptions were of me running a charity and Jane running a business were. Turned upside down. All our points were absolutely aligned. Sector lines increasingly a red herring in running a responsibility. Left inspired after then listening for two hours. Immersed in the business lived experience of the audience. The cost of not. On recruitment. Revenues. Reputation. A reality lens for investment decisions. And trust yourself. You didn’t come into what you do with all the answers. But probably know the right questions. Make the intangible benefits visible. Command and control does not work. A Conductor of an Orchestra which includes all staff playing the music wanted by your customers does. Attracting talent. The process should be about you telling them why you are part of the organisation. Not why they have applied for the job. So putting learning into instant practice: Purple Tuesday is transforming the customer experience for disabled people and their families. It is enabling organisations to understand, implement and become accessibility independent. Working with the Team is absolutely fun 24/7 and makes me happy. Last year, Greggs experienced the highest growth in many years across all areas of the business. What way forward? When you run a B Corp, there isn’t a map to guide you. You’re forced to make decisions that often defy conventional business logic. During our B Corp Month panel event last week four B Corp leaders recounted moments where they had found themselves at a crossroads. Each business had decided to pave a way forward, often going against the grain of their industry. What I found most interesting is that when asked to explain why they had made purposeful decisions, there wasn’t a mention of complex analyses, but rather a deeper sense that it was simply the right thing to do - an invisible moral compass guiding them all forward. Whether it was Pip & Nut | B Corp deciding not to pursue the profitable chocolate spread market for health and environmental reasons, Brompton Bicycle loaning bikes to NHS workers during the pandemic, Back Market giving the finger to Black Friday, or Lucky Saint | B Corp™ reimagining D2C packaging to cut weight and carbon. Judged by the cold eye of capitalism, these decisions make little sense. But what I saw was four thriving businesses, who believe in something bigger than themselves. Four businesses who may have said no to a quick buck, but yes to a deeper definition of success.
