Lately, I have been having a lot of conversations about #5G and the future of the mobile wireless industry in the light of disillusionment, geopolitics, and what seems like a growing and dangerous apathy toward the generation of technologies in play at present and for the remainder of this decade,... probably well beyond. I had the privilege over a year ago to have a conversation with Qualcomm's John Smee, SVP of Wireless Research about the mental reset we need to get back in a race that has not halted or lost its significance in the future of computing (despite today's overwhelming focus on GenAI supercomputing). At the time, neXt Curve was recommending a focus on infrastructure and operational modernization in the midst of aimless discussions about 5G monetization. Our emphasis was on getting the foundations right to foster the transition from NSA to SA as more devices penetrated the market able to support Release 16 features and beyond (something Qualcomm has a handy role in). But it takes time to establish those foundational capabilities. It also takes time for operators to arrive at a state of readiness where the baseline operational benefits of making the transition to SA makes business sense. In regard to 5G (and increasingly 6G), all eyes are on China. Can the industry outside of China afford to remain disillusioned chasing shiny objects? Take a listen and share your thoughts. It would be great to drive some mind share toward reconstituting the 5G (and 6G) conversations. #nextcurve #5Gadvanced #5Gstandalone @https://lnkd.in/g7WtBqqG

as the world enters a crucial window of opportunity to identify technologies and formulate key standards for 6G. While there is still no universally accepted definition of the technology, 6G is expected to have far lower latency, higher speeds and more bandwidth than 5G.

Dell and Micron secretly funded a campaign against Chinese rivals. Details and free link below. China Tech Threat is a research and advocacy group that has successfully pushed state bans on Beijing-linked products. It especially focuses on Lenovo laptops and various semiconductors while saying nothing of the funding its received from US tech giants which stand to benefit. US companies are increasingly willing to lean in on tensions with China. Meta has repeatedly warned of national security risks from TikTok while other companies have argued against regulation by saying it will allow China to leap-frog capabilities. What's sticky here is the country remains a major manufacturing center and consumer market, and companies fear retaliation. Former Dell and HP employees describe years of indecision on whether to emphasize Lenovo's China links as it grew into the world's largest computer-maker. Paywall-free link -
