Today is #InternationalWomensDay. According to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, 51% of visual artists today are women, however this number is not represented in museums, exhibitions and galleries. There are various actions we can all take as art leaders, experts and appreciators to bring out better equality in the art world. The first step forward is to look backwards and readdress women forgotten in history. Revealing this rich history of women’s artists will prove that it’s a lack of visibility, as opposed to a lack of content, which has set women’s progress back. [And] we can’t forget artists of the present. Museums need to acquire more women’s art at auctions; writers need to pen more pieces about women artists; members of the public need to visit more exhibitions that include women’s art. Enforcing 50/50 gender quotas is not the solution – it merely brushes the issues under the carpet and creates a false image of quality. For the best women artists to succeed, they need to be given support from the very beginning so that they can compete with men in a fair and natural way. https://lnkd.in/dbZ9Mft #SweibelArts #IWD2024

Is it OK for an art exhibition to exclude men? In a truly innovative form of art imitating life, The Ladies Lounge, an art installation in an Australian gallery has been making headlines. This women-only exhibit was installed in 2020 at the Tasmanian MONA Gallery by artist Kirsha Kaechele. It is an installation experience for women-only, an elegantly furnished space offering a decadent high tea that sought to draw attention to and reverse themes of gender-based entitlement and discrimination. The space is serviced by male butlers "who live to serve women, attending to their every wish and showering them with praise and affection". 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. This "Ladies Lounge" takes the concept of an old Australian pub and turns it on its head. A sex discrimination complaint was raised by a male visitor to the exhibit who was denied entry to the Ladies Lounge exhibit. The museum agrees the exhibit does indeed discriminate. But it argued the complainant hasn't missed out on anything - he experienced the artwork exactly as intended. 𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐝, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞'𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐞, 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 "𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞" 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 "𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐒 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤". In response to a court ruling that men should be permitted to view the exhibition, The Ladies Lounge is currently being modified to include a 𝒕𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒕, allowing the curators to reopen it as a women-only space. I am really torn on this case. On the one hand exclusion goes against what so many of us are working towards. On the other hand, the provocative experience of exclusion being turned into art is at least generating a discussion around the world about the problems with gender segregation (thinking here of the recent scandal around high profile men holding membership to this country's most exclusive mens club - The Garrick Club). What do you think - is this a powerful work of genius, or an offensive message? #GenderBias #GenderEquality #BreakingBarriers https://lnkd.in/eZafD8d3

The 2022 Countess Report shows women make up 33.6% of artists featured in state gallery programs in Australia. That's despite women representing the majority of visual arts graduates — almost two-thirds of graduates identify as female or non-binary, while men account for 21%. The peak body for the visual arts NAVA says urgent action is needed from galleries and governments to reach parity. #CountessReport2022

Went to this Tate exhibition of women artists in Britain 1520–1920 yesterday and what an eye-opener it was! Hits home the way women were intentionally erased and excluded from the world of painting in Europe for hundreds of years. When this happens in all realms of achievement and self-expression, no wonder the effects are deeply rooted in our culture and we continue to mistrust women's potential. Women were not 'just not that good at painting' or not interested in being professional painters and making a commercially successful career out of it. Although well we know this, seeing these works and the artists' stories in one place was a startling experience. Seeing in real life how precisely equally talented and technically and artistically excellent to men (and more) those very few women were, who had or fought for the opportunity to paint. And the special qualities they brought to their art. And what successful careers they made out of it. And what a tiny fragment of even these works remains. The systematic, generations-long minimising and suppressing of women's ability means we don't grow up seeing enough female excellence - in any area. No wonder the belief keeps persisting that women just aren't quite as good, or that we shouldn't be ambitious. (Look at who is leading companies, look at who gets business investment etc. etc. etc). Women and girls continue to fight that belief about ourselves too and each other. But it is not true. We can be geniusly talented and become Masters in our skills. None of what I'm saying here is news, but seeing this exhibition makes you really SEE it. Not to mention exquisite pieces of art. Strong recommend. #womeninbusiness #realisingpotential #celebratingachievements

Is the status of female representation in the art world changing? 🎨 The 2023-4 'Art Basel & UBS Report', which mainly surveys UHNWIs, shows that their collections remain dominated by male artists, with a ratio of 61% male to 39% female. 🎨 The report suggests that collector purchasing decisions do not necessarily have gender bias but are in fact due to a disparity in the proportion of female artists represented by galleries worldwide. 🎨 On a more positive note, 'The Women Artists Market Report 2024' by the international sales platform, Artsy, shows a bolstered auction market for female artists born after 1985. These women hold 63% of auction sales compared to their male counterparts. 🎨Taking a wider view, women artists account for 44% of the auction market in general - a 2% rise from the year before. These figures show me that, although ultra-contemporary female artists are being recognised for their talents, there is still a historical gender gap to correct. I am proud that Gillian Jason Gallery continues to champion the best of art by women in order to provide a platform for under-exposed voices in the market.

Thanks to DJ Rakim on sharing his views on why it’s important to have ‘Women Shaping Spaces’ in the music industry and DJ-ing, when visiting the Women of the NEB Exhibition recently. The New European Bauhaus prides itself on taking an interdisciplinary approach. With bringing those working in various fields together from the creative industries of Artists, Designers, Musicians, Architects to Scientists and those working in the Built and Urban Environments. It’s important to consider the NEB values #Inclusive, #Sustainable and #Beautiful. #Diversity and Inclusion are not just buzzwords; they are essential pillars for fostering innovation and representation within the #creativeindustries, particularly in the #musicindustry. Elevating diverse and #intersectional #women to #leadership positions is crucial for amplifying a broader range of voices and perspectives, enriching the artistic landscape and challenging stereotypes. In the realm of female DJs, this means not only celebrating their unique contributions to music but also addressing the pervasive issue of harassment and violence they encounter, especially within the night-time economy. By placing diverse women in leadership roles, we can enact #policies to prioritize safety and create environments where all individuals feel empowered to express themselves freely. Moreover, having diverse women in leadership enables a more nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by female DJs, leading to more effective advocacy and support initiatives. By amplifying their voices and experiences, we can work towards dismantling systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality and discrimination. This approach fosters a more equitable and safer environment for everyone involved in the music industry, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of gender or background, can fully participate and thrive in creative endeavors. Do you think about discrimination when you think about art and artists? Probably not, but when I read this article and it really opened my eyes. I was shocked to learn some of the details, such as this little tidbit: "One study, using a sample of 1.9 million auction transactions from 1970 to 2016, showed that paintings by female artists sell for 42 percent less compared to similar ones by male artists." Women face discrimination in so many facets of their lives, both professionally and personally, so I am not sure why this information surprised me so much. The article isn't one of just despair though. There are several helpful suggestions for female artists to fight discrimination in their workplace, including social networking. https://buff.ly/3SYKIx9 #Artist #Creative #Discrimination #Women #FemaleArtists #Artwork #Creativity #DiscriminationInTheWorkplace
