"Innovation is not always a structured process,” writes Page Principal + Healthcare Planning Director Mark Vaughan. “Creativity and collaboration thrive in the spontaneity of informal conversations, chance encounters, and the exploration of nature. As academic medical centers continue to push the boundaries of medical knowledge in laboratories and lecture halls, planners and designers should embrace the potential for discovery in unexpected places. “Public and private spaces should contain synapses—intersecting points that can create intentional opportunities for meaningful conversations. These are places people want to go during their normal routines to grab coffee, eat lunch, take a break outside, or walk along a familiar track." Designing Better Healthcare. Much of the work we do in healthcare is about helping patients and professionals achieve better outcomes through the design of better products and experiences. An important part of this relates to the environment in which care is delivered. We provided input to a Sensing Spaces of Healthcare research project led by Victoria Bates at University of Bristol which explored the question: Can good design make a difference to our healthcare spaces? Take a few minutes to watch this nice summary of the insights and some of the work contributing to achieving better healthcare by design. #design #healthcare Kinneir Dufort | SteriPack Design & Product Development

A case study of healthcare transformation through service design
The NUS Division of Industrial Design, National Healthcare Group, and CHI - Centre for Healthcare Innovation are proud to present our collaborative publication: The Sustainable Hospital Playbook! From August to November last year, 21 Industrial Design students collaborated with Tan Tock Seng Hospital staff from the Endoscopy Centre, Inpatient Wards, Care & Counselling department, Community Health Team, and Kitchen to innovate feasible, low-cost solutions to address sustainability from a ground-up perspective. The Sustainable Hospital Playbook details the various approaches and opportunities explored during the project, and also showcases the different design outcomes and impacts of each design team’s proposed interventions. The playbook aims to inspire healthcare practitioners to leverage on simple design opportunities that can make their daily processes more sustainable. The case studies also show how simple interventions can make significant sustainable impacts in the long run. Special thanks to all the designers, staff and healthcare practitioners for contributing their expertise and enthusiasm to make this book a reality! "How might we approach healthcare construction differently? The end goal should no longer be a building. The goal should be the experience of the people working in the facility so that they know what their environment can do, and how to manipulate it to their needs."
