I’m thrilled to share this blog post I got to co-author with Brooke Lovett. Our blog discusses the critical issue of heatwaves, offering practical tips for individuals to mitigate their heat risks and advocating for necessary governmental actions. Dive into our insights and join the conversation on how we can all stay safe and cool:
☀ 😰 Can’t take the heat? You shouldn’t have to! Extreme heat causes more deaths in the US than hurricanes, floods, and tornados combined, according to the CDC. Thankfully, there are environmental and infrastructure solutions that can help. https://lnkd.in/ggzCcTwh In part two of our blog series on public health, Environmental Compliance & Sustainability Intern Ellie Johnson and Emergency Management Intern Brooke Lovett discuss the impacts and risks of heatwaves and what governments, corporations, and individuals can do to cool off. What are you doing to protect yourself, your community, and/or your employees from the dangers of heatwaves? Let us know in the comments. #Heatwave #PublicHealth #EnvironmentalSolutions #Sustainability #ResilientCommunities #InPursuitOfBetter

In the U.S., the dominant approach to #firemanagement is defined by a transactional relationship, in which humans interact with fire through policy planning and management based on the assumptions that #fire causes a loss of life and property, has negative health effects, and is expensive to battle. A more desirable future perspective is more holistic, basing fire #policy and management on a larger suite of considerations, including the ecosystem services provided by fire and the social, economic, and political values of these services. This more holistic view would facilitate a move away from fire suppression and exclusion as the dominant fire management approach and instead provide the resources and practices to implement fire management activities that increase ecosystem resilience. This is a pivotal moment for California and the world. Proposition 4, if successful, is going to be essential for maintaining California's leadership in adapting to a changing climate, protecting clean water and clean air and reversing the biodiversity crisis here in the most biodiverse state in the nation and one of only 5 global biodiversity hotspots.
