Co-founder and Associate, Playing Out. Campaigner for children’s freedom to play out where they live.
“Planning is a complex and politically charged activity, and will only become more fraught as we face up to climate change. Yet amongst all this complexity, one moral is clear: the more planning focuses on the car, the worse the results for children”. A concise and spot-on summary from Tim - how a “child-lens” on policy could transform our streets and places (and childhood itself).

…2nd of Tim Gill s 3 important points: ….we need processes, policies, guidance, indicators, participation methods and other tools that ensure children’s needs and views are not forgotten, and that hold decision makers to account.

Did you know that single-family zoning is locking out affordable housing options? Across the US, cities are restricting land development to single-family homes, perpetuating historic patterns of inequity. In many communities, including those in Massachusetts and Connecticut, more than 80% of the land available is zoned strictly for single-family homes, restricting the ability to build new homes. These restrictions are essentially continuing a pattern of housing segregation, keeping people with low-incomes out and making housing in general scarce, expensive, and exclusive in some areas. But change is happening! States like Minnesota, Oregon, and California are paving the way for more inclusive housing options. By ending single-family zoning, these states are allowing more housing to be gradually added to existing neighborhoods, providing a supply of housing that is not only needed, but will further ease price growth. Join us and organizations like DesegregateCT and Abundant Housing MA to advocate for change in your community. Learn more about the impact of single-family zoning, and how you can get involved, in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/ebVDjufk #EndSingleFamilyZoning #HousingForAll #CIL #CILDevelopsHomes #CILDevelopsCommunities #Community #AccessibleHousing #Relationships #Inclusion #RealEstateDevelopment

Several months ago, I was one of many interviewed as part of the Milken Institute research on #affordablehousing and #olderadults. As their report shares, the demand for affordable senior housing and care will only increase as the US population ages. Their Milken Institute report identifies the barriers to access and showcases the potential paths forward to change the landscape of senior housing and care. https://lnkd.in/ecyYq8aA #seniorlivingdesign

We're excited to have partnered with Fortune, contributing data from Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index for the third annual Fortune 50 Best Places to Live for Families 2024. This year's ranking highlights a city in each state where multigenerational families are most likely to have access to excellent schools, highly recommended hospitals, affordable housing, resources for older adults, and a strong sense of community. Notably, Silver Spring, MD, and Portsmouth, NH, have ranked in the top 10 for the second consecutive year, while Iowa City, IA, has been honored on the list for three years running. Our vice president of research, Dr. Michael Rickles, told Fortune, “We know that health isn’t just what’s happening inside your body. It’s your social connections, your perceptions of safety, and there’s a lot that goes into what makes a city well.” This perspective is central to our Index, which Dr. Rickles described as a “person-centric” metric, considering social determinants of health such as access to transportation, green spaces, parks, libraries, and community. Advancing #HealthEquity starts by addressing social determinants of health at the local level. That's why today, we announced an investment of nearly $35 million towards the development of affordable housing in Hawaii. 👇 🏘️ Each affordable housing community will offer residents supportive social and educational programs tailored to address specific needs of both communities. For example, one of the units located in Lahaina, Maui will bring much needed affordable housing options, along with accessible health and educational resources, to families in an area heavily impacted by the 2023 Maui fires. 📚 And in Kapolei, Oahu, residents of the affordable housing units will have access to no-cost education, health and wellness services – including an on-site preschool, a unique feature for this property to help residents and their families thrive. CVS Health is committed to providing historically underserved communities with access to meaningful resources like affordable housing and high-quality health care.
