For those who don't know, I wrote my Masters paper on the impact of local media on recidivism rates and have long been advocating for a more solutions-focused approach to crime reporting. My research found that: 🔃 Solutions-focused journalism is an approach that focuses on responses to social issues, in addition to the problems themselves, and can deliver sophisticated, evidence-based, and balanced stories that push an issue forward, provide information individuals can act on and ultimately spur societal change; 🔃 Solutions-focused journalism differs from other types of journalism through, instead of pointing out what's wrong in the hope that someone will fix it, pointing out what's right hoping that someone can imitate it; 🔃 After adopting a solutions-focused approach, a local newspaper in Alabama in the US noted a much more structured conversation around crime and public safety; 🔃 Another study showed that individuals felt less negative and more favourable towards news stories if the reporter included discussion of an effective solution to the problem; 🔃 News audiences are declining generally due to constant bad news and 'compassion' fatigue; 🔃 Participants in another study who were frustrated with the lack of positive news stories balancing an overwhelming number of negative stories, expressed that local news would be more valuable if it focused less on violent crime and more on community issues, both challenges and positive developments; Chadwick Van Estrop was not only a great source of information and support during my research project, he also wrote this incredible feature story about Riley Rossiter, one of the young men I supported while he was incarcerated and during his transition out: https://lnkd.in/gXBHuFdX I'm thrilled for both Chad and Riley that this piece is now a finalist for Best Feature Story at the Rural Press Club of Victoria Awards on October 11. #Community
