I help executives develop, deploy and deliver strategy bringing clarity, building capability and improving results
The ultimate goal of any team is to achieve collective results. Whilst I fully agree with the strong connection between cohesive teamwork and the attainment of sustainable team results, it’s not all about behaviors. Our experience confirms that improving collective results could require interventions in multiple areas to change and improve the components that contribute to results This could be to build more cohesive team behaviors, although it could also require interventions to define clearly what those collective results are. We often face this dilemma. The conversation goes something like “Can you help us improve teamwork” or “Please let us have a proposal for a Five Behaviors programme with our executive team”. That’s a great conversation starter, although, a few more questions often reveal that the reason for poor team alignment, difficult relationships, or a focus on individual results has as much to do with a lack of clarity about what the team’s strategy is, as it has to do with the way that the team behaves. You can’t separate team behavior from the team context (the quest for results). So, our dilemma is which of these two opportunities should organizations address first? Should we start by defining the results or build cohesive behaviors from the bottom up? There is no right or wrong answer here. Like any physician, you need to take care not to treat the symptoms (behaviors) without a robust diagnosis and treatment for the underlying cause (results). Is this then an argument for defining the team’s collective results first to provide a foundation for work on team behaviors? Our experience suggests that the Five Behaviors program and structured interviewing tend to highlight where teams lack alignment around strategy. Effective program design, facilitation, and advice will help them commit to action to address it. As a strategy consultant, I generally recommend both pieces of work take place in parallel (or at least in quick succession) because I've learned that cohesive teams will always have more productive discussions as they develop strategic intent, define their priorities, and allocate accountability for delivering them.

This is where the diversity impact is felt, you have to align and unify around the results we need to get as business leaders. We cannot just imagine the perfect society and then try and make that a reality in each business. That is nice to think about but neither practical nor desired. Each business is a unique environment with unique members, and what we build must always be aligned with the purpose and mission we have been given. Just food for thought as societal and social pressure from outside the organization increases. #strategicthinking
