While I understand the nuances of the funding sources, it is still disturbing.
Associate Dean for Research, Samuel DeWitt Proctor Endowed Chair in Education & Distinguished Prof at Rutgers University–New Brunswick
Please read carefully. We were very excited to bring the HBCUs and Registered Apprenticeship Mini-Conference to you next week. Our team had planned a rich event filled with the voices of HBCU leaders and students. Unfortunately, due to President Trump’s Executive Orders (EOs) titled “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing,” issued on January 20, 2025, and “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” issued on January 21, 2025, we have been asked to cease all work under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility HUB at Jobs for the Future, which the U.S. Department of Labor funds. We offer our apologies to all those who signed up for the event. We appreciate you. Of note, this was not the cancellation of an HBCU event but an event funded by a federal DEI Hub. The majority of the panelists were from JFF, the federal government, or were DEIA Hub partners, who all received a stop work notice from the Department of Labor. Our Center is still going strong with the support of our funders and donors!! We have so much happening at the Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions, and we can’t wait to engage with you in the future. Please stay tuned for our regular programs and opportunities.

Have you heard about the National Governor Association's "Let's Get Ready" initiative? We recently hosted an exclusive conversation for our clients and colleagues with Tamara (Tammi) Hiler, Governor Polis' special advisor for K-12 and early childhood, and Seth Gerson, Program Director at the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices. Key takeaways from the initiative that were shared: ▪️ Comprehensive Scope: Covers early childhood to workforce development, emphasizing student readiness at every stage. ▪️Work-Based Learning: Highlights apprenticeships, dual enrollment, and hands-on experiences to prepare students for life after high school. ▪️New Success Metrics: Seeks innovative ways to measure readiness, focusing on 21st-century skills beyond diplomas and test scores. ▪️Kindergarten Readiness: Explores ways to define readiness consistently across states to align early learning with K-12 goals. ▪️Scaling Proven Strategies: Evaluates what’s working—like high-impact tutoring—and aims to scale successful programs. It was a privilege to offer this opportunity for our community to engage in this important conversation about the future of education. #EducationPolicy #StudentSuccess #WorkforceDevelopment

#ThrowbackThursday #CTEWorks: We (Justin Dayhoff) also implemented transformative reforms, including the Maryland Works and Maryland Tutoring Corps programs, designed to foster strategic partnerships throughout the state to close opportunity gaps. These initiatives are addressing post-pandemic challenges and future needs, earning recognition from federal leaders as exemplary models for leveraging pandemic funding for lasting educational impact (https://bit.ly/4hFoP08). "In June 2023, Maryland awarded $12.2 million in ESSER state set-aside funding to six local education agencies (LEAs) and three statewide intermediaries through the Maryland Works initiative. The grants were designed as seed funding to build new partnerships, establish youth apprenticeship intermediary organizations and create new programs for youth. Although the grants served only half a dozen LEAs directly, all 24 districts have benefited from support by a statewide youth apprenticeship intermediary, which helps districts — particularly those in rural areas — build capacity, identify and engage interested students, manage scheduling challenges and more. Maryland Works has already demonstrated tremendous success. The number of youth apprenticeships statewide increased from 560 to 1,100 in just one year and is on track to reach the statewide goal of more than 3,000 new apprenticeships and 400 business partnerships (https://bit.ly/48IuPBs)." (Rooting for Richard W. Kincaid and the CTE Ninjas as they work to ensure implementation fidelity and achieve lasting, student-centered outcomes at scale).
Assistant State Superintendent | Division of College and Career Pathways at Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)
40 states have collectively dedicated $1.1 billion in #ESSER set-aside funds to support college and career readiness, including career/college advising, work-based learning, out-of-school time programs, early postsecondary opportunities and industry-recognized credentials. Through the Maryland Works competitive grant program (http://bit.ly/3YFvpMP), the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) was able to rapidly catalyze the youth apprenticeship system across our state. I'm so proud to have this work included in the latest CCSSO publication--and for the dedication of Tracy Kyttle and her team of CTE Ninjas who supported the efforts of so many people to bring high quality opportunities to Maryland students. Work here. Live here. Thrive here. Learn more: http://bit.ly/48edQqh #StatesLeading Council of Chief State School Officers
