Years ago (before joining Wonolo) I had just started a new role as an Account Executive - and I was really excited about it. Until I showed up for the first day of onboarding (me and ~15+ other new, excited AEs ready to crush it).. 🙃 The leaders running the onboarding told us (to our surprise) that there would be a pass/fail role play at the end of the two-week onboarding period. If you passed, congratulations - you got to remain gainfully employed! If you failed, woof.. 😳 Everyone was so anxious through the onboarding journey - constantly thinking about the big pass/fail role play looming ahead of us. The worst part was that we weren't aware of this when we received the offer. 😡 The roleplay was a full-cycle discovery, demo, and close scenario all on one call. A one-call close in sales is pretty abnormal unless you're in a highly transactional role. Thankfully, at the end of the onboarding period, most of our onboarding class passed the roleplay and moved forward in our sales career. 🙏 If you've experienced an onboarding journey like this you know how stressful it can be. Not to mention it's a pretty awful new-hire experience. That's not to say that performance and knowledge retention aren't important, but there are better ways to ensure your new hires are set up for success and able to hit the ground running. I am currently onboarding into an Account Executive role Here are 5 aspects that guide me through my first 2 weeks #1 I am responsible to prioritize I get a lot of Info from different directions. It is my responsibility to understand what matters now and what matters later. I consider every information as an offer that I can use directly or park for later. #2 Be sharp and ask questions immediately Every onboarding session has the purpose to speed me up. I hold myself accountable to be super sharp and highly present during these sessions. Whenever there is something I don't understand I ask for clarification. Even if it seems like a basic thing. #3 High level first - details later Don't get lost in details. I gain a high level understanding of different aspects so that the big picture can form in my head. #4 Get into practice quickly I have made my first cold calls on day 2. It helped me to understand whether I have what I need to get going already. #5 Call recordings are king I listen to as many recorded calls of my colleagues as possible.
