Palantir Technologies CTO Shyam Sankar has written a comprehensive takedown on the U.S. defense industry and a detailed call to action. A must read. Full of a lot of good ideas and practical wisdom, along with the infamous defense industry consolidation chart. Most significant are the dual ideas of: 1) creating more competition within DoD by empowering combatant commands (CCMDs) with full acquisition lifecycle of their requirements. 2) requiring defense primes to have a higher percentage of commercial business to subsidize taxpayer R&D and stimulate innovation from dual-use technology. Together these recommendations would prevent Program Managers from continually violating FASA's Commercial Item Preference - because "No Program Manager will recreate the wheel if a competing Program Manager is going to move faster than them by adopting something that works today." Well worth the read, so much so that I wish I had written parts of it. (Frankly, I think I COULD have written parts of it.) I agree with just about everything written here. It is obvious that Shyam Sankar, Palantir's CTO and the author of this piece, knows what he's talking about. But, to be clear: I am NOT a fan of Palantir.
