Enablement Enthusiast | Sales Craftsman | Onboarding and Development Specialist | Asynchronous Collaborator | Pink Pony Girl
I get a lot of questions about the 🥐 before my name. It’s primarily due to my 10-year career as a Pastry Chef & Baker prior to SaaS sales. 8 of those years I was in breakfast pastries, & making them fresh everyday meant working from 3:30am to at least 3:30pm (you worked until the prep list was clear) 6 days a week - if we're talking grind💀 However, it's specifically a 🥐 due to my specialization in French pastries, laminated dough & Viennoiserie- the bridge between French pastry & bread. Think any yeasted dough with hundreds of flakey layers like croissants, danishes, or my fave, the kouign-amann. I was also a pastry cook (part time at 50 hours/week - yes, you read correctly) while going to French Pastry School five mornings/week (if we're really talkin' grind ⚙) I think about those days often, but more deeply when I'm in job hunt & interview mode, as so many are these days. When I was transitioning from kitchen to cubicle, I noticed hiring managers weren't connecting my transferable skills in the kitchen to my potential skill in a sales/account management role. It was 2014 & they weren't accustomed to hiring outside a typical candidate profile. I was just a guy who made food. I learned to connect the dots for them. This was the beginning of my love for crafting an impactful, informative, value-focused story 🤔 I fell flat on my face many times before I found my unique voice & was able to confidently convey the value I would bring to a team in corporate America based on firsthand stories & evidence from my experience in the kitchen. With zero experience, I beat 15 experienced candidates to get my first Sales gig- looking at you, Michelle Levy (Matthew Blume, even though Andy snagged me😆) A good story = 💪 I still use stories from my time in the kitchen as examples today. Thanks to shows like The Bear & Top Chef, more people understand the deeper value in things like mise en place or "yes, chef" & "heard" along with the teamwork that is required. It's become easier to help people connect the dots, but we're still not all the way there when it comes to hiring different or unconventional backgrounds. As I'm typing, I've realized: this is the intro to 🥐Croissant Chronicles🥐 (al a Kol Souers' Friday Father Feelings🦙 💛) where I'll attempt to shed light on transferable skills & the value of building teams with diverse backgrounds & experiences for a more productive, progressive team. I'll do my best to illustrate this through my first hand experiences as an individual contributor, manager, & executive in both the kitchen & SaaS Sales, as well as insights I've gleaned along the way. Oof, that's a lofty goal with no posts on deck, but I feel passionately about broad experience fostering a stronger, more holistic approach to business and sales (clearly, just look at my resume 🙃 ) Let's see how this goes! Chime in with your stories! Stronger through sharing 🤝

Today, I just found myself questioning the effectiveness of our HR and Management in hiring the right talent, especially in senior roles. I arrived at the office early, focused on completing a project before lunch. While working, I saw an incident that really highlighted how even senior professionals can make serious errors. Our department head asked my reporting boss, a Senior Merchandiser who is responsible for seven departments, to send an important email to one of our key buyers about a sample we had recently finished. The email was supposed to say the sample would be sent in three days, but instead, due to a careless grammar mistake, it stated that the sample had already been sent. The buyer was furious and immediately called our Managing Director to complain. It was shocking to see such a basic error from someone in a senior position. As a Senior Merchant, attention to detail is critical. Mistakes like this should not happen at that level, and it raises questions about whether HR and Management are hiring people with the right skills and precision for the job. In this line of work, small mistakes can lead to big problems, especially when dealing with important clients.

It's hard to believe how fast things are moving... Jon & I are ecstatic to be hiring two full-time salaried positions at our restaurant, Another Broken Egg, which will be opening later this Fall. It's crazy to think we're already at this point in the development- the days have been flying by! We're looking to hire on a General Manager who would be responsible for managing and overseeing daily cafe operations. In addition to this, we'll be bringing on a Kitchen Manager to focus on back-of-house operations and work directly with the GM. If y'all know anyone who'd be interested in either position, please share this post or the Indeed job posting (linked in the comments below 👇). One thing I'm particularly excited about are the incentive structures Jon and I have put together for these two positions. We firmly believe in aligning incentives and rewarding key players. Hope y'all are hungry... We're coming soon! - #wichitaks #wichitawins #hiring #entrepreneurship
