Keynote Speaker on the topic of “Human Interaction (H.I.) in an A.I. World” and CEO at the Austin Technology Council. Community Builder, Storyteller, Uplifter of Good People.
In my dual role with the Austin Technology Council and as a speaker, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for technology events—where tech engineers and software programmers gather not just to absorb knowledge but to forge meaningful connections. It’s clear to me that our tech communities thrive on three Cs: Community, Collaboration, and Conversations. Leaders and innovators are quickly discovering that the true secret weapon to unlocking more opportunities lies within the real connections we cultivate. Since the Middle Ages, humans have been drawn to festivals and large-scale gatherings to celebrate community and innovation. This tradition evolved into the 20th-century World Fairs, where people from all corners came together to marvel at the future. The essence? People are inherently programmed to seek out collective experiences that enrich their skills and motivation. Yet, in our current era, I notice a trend towards “rationalizing isolation”. Many shy away from meeting new faces, opting out of the very experiences that could propel their careers forward. This hesitation often leads to missed promotions and opportunities, leaving many to wonder where they went astray. I’m not advocating for a complete overhaul of your work-life balance. Remote work has its merits, offering flexibility and efficiency that traditional workspaces can’t always match. Nor am I suggesting you attend every networking event on the calendar, join every professional association, or dedicate all your free time to volunteering. However, dipping your toes into these waters “some of the time” can significantly impact your career trajectory and personal growth. Engage selectively but meaningfully. Not every interaction will lead directly to a breakthrough, but consistent participation creates a network of opportunities. Over time, engaging with your community opens doors to success that isolation never will. Let’s not forget the power of our collective. By staying engaged and open to new connections, we ensure that the right opportunities—and people—will find their way to us. So, here’s to making the most of our gatherings, conferences, and every chance to connect. After all, it’s these connections that drive our industry—and us—forward. #TechCommunity #Networking #ProfessionalGrowth #AustinTech

What a great way to end the month - #mketech region is listed as #2 as the best place in America to have a #RemoteTechCareer by TechRepublic! Cities were ranked based on cost of living, quality of life, and the ability to continue learning through tech education and networking I'd argue that they under-evaluated tech conferences in #mketech including Summerfest Tech, Cyphercon, and other one day events. At MKE Tech Hub Coalition, we're seeing the #growth -- Over 5.5% annual growth in tech workers, including remote jobs, according to #Tecna's annual survey Article: https://lnkd.in/gag5mRUJ More on #mketech region, including upcoming events: https://lnkd.in/gSPqQFna

The biggest mistake you can make in tech? Thinking it's all about tech. It isn't. Sure, it's your starting point. But growth? That's found outside your comfort zone. Here are 3 strategies to advance your tech career: 1. T-Shaped Skills: Become an expert in one thing but learn enough in others to “connect the dots” between them. 2. Networking: Knowing people opens opportunities to learn and explore the vast tech-landscape. Attend virtual/physical meetups, hackathons, and conferences. 3. Culture fit: Most companies want to hire people they want to work with. Communicate what you care about and seek out companies that prioritize similar values. Don't let tech define you. Update your skills and make good relationships.
