What is the Chinese Innovation Playbook? While we read a lot about China in the dominant western media with intermixed truth and distortion, the question remains what is the reality? Professor Keyu Jin from the London School of Economics explains: 1. Many Breakthroughs in the USA (GPS, Internet, Landing on the moon,....) happened from governmental leadership and support. China followed and follows the same model for crucial technologies e.g. Solar, EV Batteries and Vehicles, AI, Semiconductors,.... 2. While everyone thinks that China is very centralised in everything, the truth is that local provinces stimulate/support innovation and in this way create a very decentralised system. Listen to the example of the EV company NIO in the video. 3. The growth and success of China in the last 30 years is due to hyper competition among many companies supported from various local governments or private investments. 4. Ofcourse there are problems in China, after 40 years of growth (e.g. real estate, local government debts, slowing growth,...) and China while a very different governance model than the West will not be different than other countries that moved from underdeveloped, to developing and later developed country. 5. The world needs collaboration instead of cold war in order to innovate competitive technologies and applications that will bring another billion or more out of poverty (e.g. Africa) to a better standard of living & focus on social and environmental sustainability solutions. The concept of digitalization as a 'survival strategy' is acknowledged. I relate it to every 'heavy traffic' hub within or outside the corporate realm, from bustling ports to high-volume internal processes.
