More children suffer from constipation than you may realize. For #occupationaltherapy professionals it is easy to imagine the negative ripple effect this condition can have for a family. But, conversely, it is also easy to imagine what a profound impact therapy intervention can have. In this brand-new episode, you’ll hear how Quiara Smith, MOT, OTR/L, CEIM, made serving families with toileting difficulties the focus of her private practice and professional life. https://lnkd.in/dQj7pi98

Introduction to Compassion as a Resilience Tool for Helping Professionals from Center for Adolescent Studies, Inc. Compassion fatigue is a common experience with caring professionals such as counselors, teachers, mentors, nurses, and coaches. The symptoms are often attributed to being burnt out or stressed out, thus put on the side burner. Practicing self-care and fostering a resilient mind status is essential for the longevity of caring professionals. Building a healthy and strong community is the responsibility of every member. Taking care of the caring professionals is one of the simplest ways to directly impact how hurting individuals (i.e. children, students, adults, seniors) receive much-needed care.

Empowermentia: empowering those with dementia and their family members and caregivers. The job of leaders is not to come up with the best solution. It is to find the best solution. And often times, it is the non-leaders who are the ones with the answers. How can a Director of Health and Wellness/DON fix the missing hearing aid problem when he/she/they never put in or take out a hearing aid? How can an Executive Director resolve the laundry issue when he/she/they have never themselves done a load of laundry? How can a home health nurse answer an aide who asks “how do I get Mary in the shower?” when he/she/they hasn’t talked with the family and don’t know about the person. We need to empower those on the front lines and family members to come up with solutions. They often have the answers. We need to ask the questions.

One of the joys of my job is seeing our SOAR Memory Care Program by Aspenwood in action. I recently visited one of our communities to do a SOAR training for their team and came across a resident with a “challenging behavior”. After speaking with the team, they let me know that this particular resident, let’s call her Jean, has been very combative and uncooperative when needing hygiene care. They have given up, they need 3 people to do one task with Jean. Well, on this day we didn’t have three people. We had me and a resident assistant. Off with Jean we went. Yes, Jean was upset and did put up a fight. But in her own, frustrated way, she was telling us why she wasn’t happy. All we had to do was listen. Ten minutes later, Jean was as happy as lark, leaving her room hand in hand with me as we walked together to dinner. The point is, what we call “difficult behaviors” in our industry, are just a way for a person with dementia to express themselves. It is our job, our duty to figure out how to help. Our SOAR Memory Care Program teaches our staff to become detectives. To figure out the root cause of this “behavior” and not dismiss it as “aggressive”, “combative” and all those other ugly words. Let’s not get boggled down by “behaviors”. Let’s search for solutions, listen to our residents and do right by them. It’s not an easy task, but finding that “knack” is well worth the reward! #memorycare #seniorliving #seniorlivingcommunity

AES Ohio supports Rebuilding Together Dayton's mission to help older adults remain safe, healthy, and independent in their own homes and communities. All together, we're working to promote health equity and improve housing outcomes for our neighbors in economically distressed communities. Through our grant for Seasonal Safe@Home, we're supporting Rebuilding Together Dayton in empowering older adults to age in place safely and independently. With a focus on seasonal-based repairs, volunteer and homeowner education, and volunteer [Re]Build opportunities, Seasonal Safe@Home is making a significant impact. Did you know? According to a recent study by the AARP, nearly 90% of older adults prefer to stay in their current homes as long as possible. Aging in place is not only their preference but also more cost-effective than nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. Join us in championing seniors' independence and supporting our community's well-being. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/dQVmkYk

We at Gap Relief focus our therapeutic services within the sectors that keep our communities safe, that serve the least of these, that purposely stand in the fire of trauma so that we don't have to. Those are the helpers we want to serve. One of these sectors is the education system. We see educators on the front lines of our community. They are in contact with the next generation, which ultimately impacts everything in front of us. In recent years, we've seen them be asked to hold more and more. They are trained as teachers, but then they often end up playing the role of nurse, counselor, or even a parent at times. Research shows that the health of schools is directly related to the health of their communities at large. Even more research tells us that education quality is directly related to incarceration rates, alcohol abuse rates, and more as these kids go forward. Schools and teachers being equipped to hand the next generation what they need is a big deal. These educators are VITAL, but their stress levels are astronomical. So going toward them and holding up their arms allows them to equip the next generation and build healthy and trauma-informed experiences into them where they can grow into adults who are more resourced and know how to face challenges with those resources.
