The "Ladder of Participation" is a framework that always fires people up in my Inclusive Planning and Responsive Strategy workshop - this brilliant tool draws on the Ladder and deepens, updates, and details the different ways communities can have power (or not) in decision making. Such a great way to think about how organizations can shift power and decision making to those most impacted.
Sending a wave of gratitude and admiration to our friends at the @Participatory Budgeting Project for their recent blog post: "Tools for Participatory Democracy: Spectrum of Community Engagement to Ownership." 📚✨ This blog spotlights a groundbreaking tool co-developed by Rosa González of network partners Facilitating Power. It acts as a navigational aid, supporting nonprofits, community groups, and public agencies to evaluate and enhance their public and community decision making practices critically. But this spectrum is more than a tool — it's the spark for essential conversations and a guide towards redefining our civic engagement efforts. It urges us to reflect on the depth of community participation, the importance of equity and accessibility, and the goal of achieving true community ownership. Immerse yourself in the blog to discover how you can play a part in fostering a more participatory democracy: https://lnkd.in/gEZZkXSX #CommunityEngagement #ParticipatoryDemocracy

Community is more than a place. It's about the lives we touch and the impact we make. Chairing the Punggol West Community Centre Management Committee... I have seen the power of community engagement. It creates a space where people feel supported, connected, and empowered. The impact? We nurture a sense of belonging and mutual support. From youth programs to initiatives for the elderly, our efforts are designed to make sure no one feels left out or behind. Why this matters... In a world that's increasingly digital. The human connection matters more than ever. Our work in the community is a reminder of the tangible difference we can make in each other's lives. Here's what I've learned... Every contribution, no matter how small, has the potential to spark change. Whether it's volunteering a few hours, participating in a clean-up, or simply lending an ear to someone in need, it all adds up. And the best part? The joy of seeing our community... Come together. Overcome challenges. Celebrate achievements. Witnessing this strength in action is truly rewarding. So, here's my invitation to you: Get involved. Make an impact. Your community needs you. And trust me, the fulfillment you'll find in service is unparalleled. Together, let's make a difference. Not just for today, but for generations to come. #WeMakeImpact

Did you know that children are brimming with potential to be active and positive forces in our communities? When we give them opportunities to participate, their voices and ideas can make a real difference! Here are some ways we can empower children and encourage community engagement: 1. Volunteer opportunities: Connect them with local organizations where they can lend a helping hand (age-appropriate, of course!). 2. Community projects: Let them brainstorm and participate in projects that benefit their neighborhood, like park cleanups or beautification initiatives. 3. Open communication: Encourage them to express their thoughts and ideas about their surroundings. 4. Mentorship programs: Connect them with positive role models who can guide them and support their goals. Empowered children lead to stronger communities! Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below! How do you encourage your children to be involved in your community? #CommunityEngagement #ChildEmpowerment #FutureLeaders

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked what the definition of "community engagement" is - here is my answer: Community Engagement is not doing it to our community, nor is it doing it for our community, but rather doing it *with* our community. Engaging your community isn't just getting input from someone - it is a process that should create buy-in, trust, and co-opts ownership of ideas and projects - even if it means you don't get your way, or that it's not perfect (by your definition). Real community engagement is inclusive, transparent, well-planned, and well communicated. It's a hard reframing for some folks. It's hard to instill this in institutions and in teams that are used to their ways, and it's not something you'll get right every day. But community engagement should be seen as a portfolio of actions and intentions, not a snapshot in time - so don't give up on it. In government work, in community work, in nonprofit work, in any work - engaging your community isn't about finding consensus - because if it could be found, it would've been already - it's about creating it.

I had the privilege of addressing youths in Matero and here are some points as to why Youth Engagement is important. Youth engagement is critically important for several reasons: - Fresh Perspectives and Innovation: Young people bring new ideas, creativity, and fresh perspectives to societal issues and challenges. Their innovative thinking can lead to novel solutions that benefit communities and society as a whole. - Empowerment and Participation: Engaging youth empowers them to actively participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and futures. This fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their communities. - Building Civic Responsibility: Youth engagement helps in cultivating civic responsibility and a sense of duty towards society. When young people are involved in community service, volunteering, and advocacy, they develop a deeper understanding of social issues and the importance of contributing positively to society.
