On this World Environment Day, it's important to recognize the significant impact climate change has on our health. As highlighted in a recent article by News9Live, climate change is linked to several diseases. Among these, the risk of hypothyroidism is of particular concern. Changes in temperature and environmental stressors can disrupt thyroid function, leading to a range of health issues. Thyroid medications are already the most prescribed drug in the country, growing at a high 5% CAGR. Could climate change be the sole reason? We doubt it, considering the autoimmune component of hypothyroidism, but it definitely plays a role! https://lnkd.in/ewp9mT6c #WorldEnvironmentDay #ClimateChange #ThyroidHealth #Hypothyroidism #PalomaHealth #womenshealth

According to a new report by the World Economic Forum, by 2050, climate change is expected to cause an additional 14.5 million deaths and $12.5 trillion in economic losses worldwide. The report also points out that healthcare systems will face an additional $1.1 trillion burden due to climate-induced impacts. Floods, droughts, and heat waves are identified as leading causes of climate-related mortality and economic losses. The report also forecasts the rise and spread of climate-sensitive diseases like malaria and dengue. Learn more about this pressing issue in the World Economic Forum report: https://ow.ly/zJHq50RiNv3

Climate change and diabetes are two important global problems that only at first glance seem to have nothing to do with each other. The impact of the climate crisis can influence the treatment and prevalence of diabetes. What used to be called the "summer of the century" or the "flood of the century" is now occurring with increasing frequency. Extreme temperatures but also extreme weather events have an impact on glucose metabolism. Studies show that one degree increase in temperature leads to 100,000 new cases of diabetes. Heat waves can increase hospital admissions of diabetic patients due to impaired glucose tolerance. Anthropogenic activities worsen air quality, increase particulate matter and ozone levels, all of which can also cause cellular damage. In the escalating climate crisis, we are experiencing devastating forest fires, which can directly increase the incidence of diabetes. Particulate matter (PM 2.5) and other pollutants in the air can trigger systemic inflammation in the body. - Further information in the climate tip (Klimatipp) in the Bavarian Medical Gazette from October 2023 #diabetes #climatecrisis #heatwaves #airpollution

CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISEASES Climate change is recognized as the greatest threat to human health of the 21st century, according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021). Vector-borne diseases occur when organisms such as mosquitoes transmit bacteria, viruses and parasites to humans. Climate change has already increased the geographical area in which vectors can find optimum conditions to thrive, and this is only set to grow, bringing diseases to regions and countries for the first time. Changes in temperature are also associated with an increase in food-borne diseases, as warmer weather leads to bacteria, such as salmonella, multiplying more quickly, heightening the contamination risk from farm to fork for workers and consumers.

3.6 billion people worldwide are vulnerable to climate change, according to the World Health Organization. This number will keep increasing as climate change worsens. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change will cause 250,000 deaths from undernutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress alone. This statistic shows us the need for global action to stop climate change's impacts from reaching more people. The present-day effects will compound, affecting even more people in the future. The health and climate risks are disproportionately in populations with low income and regions in the Global South. These groups lack much-needed necessities, including clean water and medical supplies, needed to combat the health risks brought on by climate change. They become trapped in a climate cycle as they become even more vulnerable to climate risks, continuing the problem. #climatechange #climateaction #climateeducation #impact #kidsfightclimatechange
