Portfolio Lead for Birmingham-based projects for youth, women's health/maternity engagement, involvement, participation and co-production
I'm so utterly proud, delighted and inspired by the award won by Flourish. Flourish is the West Birmingham Community Health Collaborative developed through the support of Legacy West Midlands, BSol ICS and Ladywood Perry Barr Locality Partnership. The NHS Race Equality Award recognises five pioneering programmes we co-produced with communities that together tackle ethnic health inequalities, particularly around maternity, and promote a more equitable NHS for service users and staff: 1. Designed by LBPLP and delivered in secondary schools by the Young People's Education Company, the Best Start in Life Health Hack focuses on reducing Infant Mortality through education about risk factors, healthy choices around pregnancy and birth, and the introduction of the service landscape, including key careers - raising aspirations and diversifying recruitment base. 2. Community Research Work Experience offers more, and more diverse secondary pupils the chance to work with NHS midwives on a community research topic of mutual interest. Requiring as few as 3 contact hours from supporting clinicians, it stimulates interest in an NHS career at the sharp end of health inequalities and equips pupils with a basic professional network. 3. Flourish’s Community and Cultural Immersion programme is an innovative 2-week placement in West Birmingham schools and community partners that supports the development of culturally sensitive practitioners, offering a grounding in reflective practice, active listening, respectful questioning, trauma informed practice, rebuilding trust and change leadership. A programme for NHS staff is in development. 4. Doula Connectors are a combined workforce of 20+ community-based doulas offering language- and culture-specific support to Black and Global Majority (BGM) women in West and East Birmingham. Run by Flourish, Bethel Doula and Approachable Parenting, the programme provides direct support for birthing women, as well as parenting courses and online workshops, while amplifying women’s voices to drive service improvement. 5. Underpinning all of this work is the upcoming roll-out of a Creative English with Health Literacy programme to enable West Birmingham residents to confidently advocate for themselves and their families, and preparing young people to take advantage of the schools programmes in the suite. The cycle of activity responds not just to listening within the community, but also to the wider recommendations of the ground-breaking BLACHIR report - Birmingham and Lewisham African and Caribbean Health Inequalities Review (2022). Among other things, the report highlights the impact of racism and discrimination within maternity and parenthood, mental health and emergency care, suggesting opportunities for action.
Huge congratulations to community network Flourish and the Ladywood and Perry Barr Locality Partnership, which jointly won the 2023 Health Service Journal Award for Race Equality in London last week. Enabled and supported within the NHS Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System, the partnership won the award for its innovative work tackling health inequalities facing black and global majority women and families in West Birmingham. https://lnkd.in/e9ZnNbub

Happy Juneteenth! Today, we celebrate the end of slavery in the US and reflect on the ongoing fight for racial equality. As we celebrate Juneteenth, it's important to consider how healthcare disparities continue to impact communities of color. We need to keep focusing on addressing these disparities and promoting health equity. #Juneteenth.

Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a pervasive issue that violates human rights and creates barriers to safe, equitable, and inclusive societies. To address SGBV, we need to implement strategies that include education and awareness, empowering survivors, prevention programs, training and capacity building, policy and legal reform, community engagement, and collaboration. Let's work together to create safer and more equitable communities for everyone. #EndSGBV #SaferCommunities #Equality

President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that the government has protected and advanced the rights of members of the LGBTQI community and continues to combat all forms of prejudice and intolerance. However, access to healthcare services, a key social determinant of health, remains a significant barrier for many LGBTQI+ individuals. This systemic issue is exacerbated by socioeconomic factors, with LGBTQI+ individuals often facing higher rates of structural violence. In her #SONA30YearsOn reflections, Tekano fellow, Seoketsi Mooketsi, reminds us that addressing these disparities requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond just legal protections. It requires targeted efforts to dismantle systemic barriers, reduce discrimination within healthcare systems and society largely, and promote inclusivity. The government’s commitment to combating prejudice and intolerance must extend to creating policies that actively address the social determinants affecting the health outcomes of LGBTQI+ individuals. Only through such concerted efforts can we achieve a more equitable society that truly protects and advances the well-being of all members of the LGBTQl+ community. #SocialDeterminants #TekanoFellowship #SONA2024

Transgender issues were a hot topic during the 2024 Utah General Session. The issue was on the Utah Priorities Project for the first time in 2024, given its top concern by many respondents in the open-ended preliminary survey. The issues perhaps came to mind for many respondents since the open-ended preliminary survey was being fielded during the Utah Legislature’s intense discussion of transgender access to medical treatment and public facilities. Nonetheless, when ranked against other issues in the main survey, it was among the least important of the 17 top issues, on average. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/geWJUWxJ #utedu #utpol

Lead Business Architect | Speaker, Lecturer and Change Lead | Published Writer | Founder of Charity Fostered Futures | Care Experienced Campaigner | Inclusion and Change Expert 💡”Obsessed with building understanding."
Curious about the movement to see care experience recognised as a protected characteristic? Trying to get your local community to move in the same direction. Until we see the change implemented under the equality act I will keep opening up these opportunities to get people together to learn about and and discuss the reasons why this action is the right thing. Josh MacAlister MP referred to the outcomes for care experienced people as the civil rights issue of our time. It was the government review he led which recommended many changes needed to the system including the inclusion of care experience as a protected characteristic under the equality act. (Link in the comments). There have been a growing number of consultations and research since all which conclude the same need to act to protect care experienced people. No one is suggesting this is a magic wand to ensure all the outcomes of care experienced children are improved, but it is a necessary step on the journey. As a care experienced person myself and someone with decades of experience delivering change and leading inclusion I will continue to play my part in raising awareness. Bringing people together to build understanding in this space. In this session we will spilt to time to cover... - Brief history of the equality act - Why equality matters for care experienced people - Consultation to date - UK campaign - Impact through action - Myth Busting (30mins) (30mins) Discussion, Q&A - If you have attended the first 30mins before there are a few new points to explore but you are welcome to just drop in on the discussion. Everyone is welcome. Care Experienced people, professionals, anyone who wants to learn or indeed add a thought to the discussion. Rosie Meek I know you were keen to drop in. Chris Wild, Terry Galloway always welcome to fly by and update us on your continued effort to led the movement. https://lnkd.in/eZrry4U6 #careexperience #fostercare #inclusion #protection #equality #equity
